Within the past decade there has been an intense interest in the role of the Right Hemisphere in human cognition and the neurocognitive deficits associated with Right Hemisphere stroke. This course will cover this decade of research from both neuropathology and neuroscience (normal brain function) perspectives. The course will then review available assessments and evidence-based interventions for Right Hemisphere associated disorders. 

First covered will be treatments for neurocognitive deficits that may underlie many of the social-emotional deficits. These treatments target working memory and exogenous attention and other cognitive disorders. Next, available treatment approaches with controlled research support will be reviewed including treatment programs for aprosodia, visual scanning and tracking disorders, higher-level linguistic, and metacognitive deficits. Offered for 0.15 CEUs – 1.5 contact hours.

At eCourse conclusion, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply deficit-based research and new neuroscience research on normal brain function to differential diagnosis of cognitive communication disorders associated with right hemisphere stroke.
  2. Utilize available assessments to diagnose types of aprosodia, social-emotional communication, linguistic and visual processing disorders.
  3. Apply neuroscience research to selection of treatment methodologies that address underlying cognitive deficits including exogenous attention, working memory, and metacognitive skills.
  4. Develop evidence-based treatment of communication disorders of patients with Right Hemisphere Dysfunction based on existing clinical research.

A score of 80% or better must be received on the post test in order 
to receive a certificate of completion.

Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a renowned author and clinician specializing in language and brain development. Dr. Burns is an ASHA Fellow, serves on the faculty of Northwestern University in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and has been a consultant to Chicago area school districts for over 30 years. She has authored three books, a test, and over 100 book chapters and articles on language and brain development, language disorders, and interventions for autism, auditory processing disorders and language disorders.

Some state boards do, however, place a limit to the number of credits that can be earned via home study/online courses. When ASHA inputs the information into their database, they will mark the course as completed on the last day of the month in which it was completed, so November 30th using this example. The certificate of completion available for you to print immediately, however, will reflect the actual completion date, November 7th in this example. Due to ASHA processing procedures please allow 2-3 weeks, from the submission date, for the course to appear on your ASHA transcript.

ASHA CEUS: Attendees must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:

  • Current ASHA Member
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
  • Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology
  • Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
  • Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
  • Engaged in a Clinical Fellowship under the supervision of an individual with their ASHA CCC
  • Currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program in SLP or audiology
