Description

eCourse Group Rate ButtonThis online speech pathology CEU course is offered for 0.2 ASHA CEUs.

Course Format: Text - including examples & references.

"Clean, precise writing or speaking requires systematic, sequential thought... Words have to be crafted, not sprayed. They need to be fitted together with infinite care... Much of the trouble we get into (as individuals or organizations or as a government) is connected to sloppy communication. Our words too often lead us away from where we want to go."
—Norman Cousins, The Communication Collapse, Time, 1990

The successful completion of a direction, whether at home or in school, involves competency on the part of the listener and precision on the part of the speaker. The notions of careful selection of words and keen awareness of intention in our communications are strongly advocated throughout this e-course.

This e-course identifies 11 specific problem areas that can lead to the breakdown of the verbal directions process. Examples of each problem area are given.  Solutions are then offered for the speaker and strategies are offered for the listener. To reinforce learning, participants are also asked to offer additional solutions and strategies for each problem area and to complete sample lesson plans for two problem areas.

Problem areas addressed:

  • Content Problems
  • Complexity Problems
  • Length Problems
  • Time Problems
  • Setting Problems
  • Manner of Presentation Problems
  • Structural Problems
  • Attention Problems
  • Language and/or Auditory Processing Problems
  • Execution Problems
  • Miscellaneous Factors

Included are three appendices. Appendix A is an informal assessment tool for verbal directions. Appendix B is a glossary of strategies and terms. Appendix C is a bibliography for further reading.

After e-course completion, be sure to see the related e-course:
