Speech restoration for the patient with tracheostomy is becoming a primary focus of the health care team. Those who work with this population are well aware of the frustration that occurs when a patient is unable to effectively communicate with family and staff. We have also seen the dramatic effect that occurs when the patient can once again speak.

Authored by a Speech-Language Pathologist and a Respiratory Therapist, this e-course focuses on the use of one-way speaking valves for the patient with a tracheostomy tube. This presentation begins with a review of the physiological effects of a tracheostomy. Features of a tracheostomy tube are examined. Eight different one-way speaking valves and the unique characteristics of each are highlighted.  Case studies are included to highlight problem solving and interdisciplinary management.

Please note:  This eCourse is set up to be flexible to accomodate all schedules.  You do not have to complete this program in one sitting.  You can access the course materials as many times as you need to in order to complete all the sections.

Course Objectives

At e-course conclusion, participants will be able to:

  1. List four one-way speaking valves.
  2. List three physiological changes after tracheotomy or placement of a tracheostomy tube.
  3. Identify the primary purpose of a tracheostomy tube cuff.
  4. Identify two contraindications for use of a one-way speaking valve.
  5. List two ways to monitor a patient during a trial with a one-way speaking valve.

A score of 80% or better must be received on the post-test in order to
