Empowered with the right information and resources managing and treating elderly clients with dysphagia can be very rewarding. This clinically relevant seminar brings together 4 leading dysphagia experts to examine current research and best practice when addressing the needs of elderly clients with swallowing disorders.  Discussion will focus on managing clients with respiratory disorders including COPD and Parkinson's disease. New research on lung volume and its effect on swallowing will also be included in the discussion. In addition, pharmacology and its effect on swallow and ethical treatment including end of life issues will also be discussed. The recommendation of non-oral feedings will also be covered including discussion of when to terminate service with challenging clients.

 

Please note:  This eCourse is set up to be flexible to accomodate all schedules.  You do not have to complete this program in one sitting.  You can access the course materials as many times as you need to in order to complete all the sections. 


Course Objectives

At e-course conclusion, participants will be able to:

1. Design a swallowing therapy program for patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease based on existing evidence of treatment effectiveness.

2. State the effects of lung volume and subglottic air pressure on swallow function in persons with swallow function.

3. Identify several medications that have been associated with causing dysphagia.

4. Explain the differences between values, morals and ethics.

 

A score of 80% or better must be received on the post-test in order to 
receive a certificate of completion.

Author Profile

Roxann Diez Gross, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a leading expert, accomplished researcher, and frequently invited international lecturer on tracheostomy-dependent patients. Prior to becoming the Research Manager at The Children's Institute, she was the Director of the Swallowing Disorders Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as well as an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology in the School of Medicine. She is now an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh. She has published several scientific papers and clinical book chapters. Her primary area of research examines interactions between breathing and swallowing in individuals with indwelling tracheostomy tubes, neurologic impairments and respiratory disease.


James F. Naas, PhD, CCC-SLP, lectures nationally to Speech-Language Pathologists on pharmacology and the geriatric population. He holds practice privileges in Medical Speech Pathology at Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro, Kentucky, where he serves on the Stroke Team and the Allied Health Credentials Committee. Dr. Naas also teaches in the undergraduate Speech Pathology and Audiology program at Brescia University in Owensboro.


Paula Leslie, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a dysphagia clinician, researcher, and educator. She is an Associate Professor of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh, and coordinates the department’s Clinical Doctorate in Medical Speech-Language Pathology. Dr. Leslie conducts research and lectures internationally on the topics of dysphagia and aging, ethics and end-of-life decisions in vulnerable populations, and the fundamentals of evidence-based practice.


Paula A. Sullivan, MS, CCC-SLP, BRS-S, currently is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Department of Neurology/Speech Section at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System in Gainesville, FL. Paula's clinical expertise and research is focused on swallowing disorders in head and neck cancer and at end of life. Paula has been affiliated with numerous comprehensive cancer centers in the past including: H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL, Sylvester Cancer Center, Miami, FL, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI.

Paula also has participated in with numerous clinical research trials in swallowing. She served as a co-regional primary investigator for the largest ever controlled, randomized research trial in oropharyngeal dysphagia funded by the National Institutes of Health (Protocol 201). Protocol 201 examined the effectiveness of chin down and thickened liquids in individuals with dementia and Parkinson's Disease both with and without dementia. Other research activities include collaborating with Dr. Jeri Logemann on numerous National Cancer Institute clinical swallowing protocols in head and neck cancer.

Additionally, Paula has published numerous articles, book chapters, and co-authored books. Books include: Swallowing Intervention in Oncology and the Easy-To-Swallow, Easy-To-Chew CookbookPaula also has co-authored multiple national guidelines, directives, and policies relating to oropharyngeal swallowing disorders for both the Veterans Health Administration and the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association (ASHA). Paula is a former coordinator of ASHA's Division 13, Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, and is an ASHA Fellow.
