This online course is intended to educate speech-language pathologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals on the colonization of oral pathogens and how oral pathogens contribute to the development of aspiration pneumonia (AP), healthcare acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). At-risk groups include infants, children, and the elderly. This online course will review current oral care practices and the evidence-based research supporting the need for improved oral care in the at-risk patient. Development of oral care guidelines for assessment and treatment in various institutional settings will be discussed.

Course Objectives

At e-course conclusion, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the colonization of oral pathogens and how this contributes to the development of
    aspiration pneumonia.

2. Define hospital acquired pneumonia, or HAP.

3. Define healthcare associated pneumonia, or HCAP.

4. List the components of a comprehensive oral care protocol.

5. List the components of an oral care assessment tool.

6. Explain tools used for deep oral cleansing.

7. Explain current evidence-based interventions to improve oral hygiene.

8. Identify at least 2 studies that demonstrate how improved oral care impacts patient health outcomes.

 

A score of 80% or better must be received on the post test in order to receive a certificate of completion.

Author Profile

Tom Franceschini, MS, CCC-SLP, is a highly sought-after speaker on the topic of Dysphagia Management, having educated thousands of Speech-Language Pathologists, Nurses and other healthcare professionals throughout North America and Europe.  With 30 years in the field, Tom has accumulated a high level of experience in all areas of medical speech pathology and continues to pursue a special interest in the esophageal stage of the swallow, and how this impacts swallowing disabilities and voice disorders.

Tom is nationally known for the role he has played in the development of the Free Water Protocol, and he routinely provides consultation to hospitals and other institutions on establishing heartburn and swallowing disorders centers, on developing free water protocols, and on implementing oral hygiene programs.

This program is offered for .15 CEUs (Intermediate level; Professional area).

Per our longstanding procedures with ASHA, we submit CEU information to ASHA quarterly, so your CEUs will be reflected as completed on the last day of that quarter.  For instance, if you complete a course on December 7th, 2011, it will be reported to ASHA in January 2012, and it will be reflected in your ASHA account as completed on December 31st, 2011.  However, for submitting to your state board or for your own records, you will receive a certificate of completion with the actual completion date.
