This e-course explains the particular communication challenges that occur when interacting with dementia patients. It will discuss strategies to use during skilled intervention and provide suggestions for intervention and carryover to support personal. Implementation of Medicare guidelines for skilled service determination is provided.

This goal of this e-course is to improve your communication with dementia patients, and improving the communication of dementia patients with others in their environment. What you learn, you demonstrate. What you demonstrate, you teach. What you teach, others imitate. Your efforts will enhance communication throughout your facility or clinic with those who require special effort. For those who are the recipients of your effort, you will revolutionize lives.

 

Please note:  This eCourse is set up to be flexible to accomodate all schedules.  You do not have to complete this program in one sitting.  You can access the course materials as many times as you need to in order to complete all the sections. 


Course Objectives

At e-course conclusion, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the need for and benefits of successful communication with dementia patients.
  2. Identify elements of communication breakdown in interactions with dementia patients.
  3. Design and implement skilled, billable assessment, and intervention services for dementia patients.

A score of 80% or better must be received on the post-test in order to
receive a certificate of completion.

Author Profile

Lou Eaves, M.S., CCC-SLP, has a B.S. degree in Speech Education from the University of Southern Mississippi, M.S. degree in Communication from the University of Southern Mississippi, and M.S. degree in Speech Pathology from Louisiana State University. She has 30 years experience in direct clinical services and administration of rehabilitation services for geriatric patients. Employment settings have included private practice, hospital, outpatient, home health and long-term care. Mrs. Eaves is currently in private practice providing direct clinical services in long-term care, consultation services related to dementia services, and product development for service delivery. Her publications include Brain Storms, A cognitive–linguistic stimulation program to manage clients with dementia as well as online educational materials related to dementia and dementia interventions.

Per our longstanding procedures with ASHA, we submit CEU information to ASHA quarterly, so your CEUs will be reflected as completed on the last day of that quarter.  For instance, if you complete a course on December 7th, 2011, it will be reported to ASHA in January 2012, and it will be reflected in your ASHA account as completed on December 31st, 2011.  However, for submitting to your state board or for your own records, you will receive a certificate of completion with the actual completion date.
