The MBSImP Online Training & Testing

The Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile, or MBSImP, is a research-based, standardization of the adult MBS study. The MBSImP assesses the integrity in each of 17 critical components of swallowing which together provide an objective profile of the physiologic impairment affecting adult swallowing function. For the first time, the MBSImP provides the means for clinicians to communicate MBS study results in an evidence-based manner that is consistent, specific, and accurate. The MBSImP is validated for use in assessing the adult population, 18 years and older.

This online training program will teach Speech-Language Pathologists to apply successfully the MBSImP scoring scheme for each of the 17 critical components of swallowing.  Participants who complete this training and pass the online Reliability Assessment testing with a minimum 80% accuracy will earn the designation of Registered MBSImP Clinician Registered MBSImP Clinician status is awarded for a period of 5 years. Further training, testing, and tuition will be required to maintain Registered MBSImP Clinician status beyond the initial 5-year period. Prerequisite: participants must have a degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

This online training is divided into zones.

LEARNING ZONE: This first zone will utilize 72 adult videofluoroscopy segments, each combined with state-of-the-art swallow animation, to demonstrate and explain the 17 physiologic components and scores of the MBSImP.

TRAINING ZONE: Within the second zone, participants put the scoring scheme to practical use through the scoring of each MBSImP component, initially on single, isolated swallows taken from swallow studies, and then scoring each component on full studies.  Participants will need to score all single swallows then score all full studies before access will be granted to zone 3, the reliability zone.

RELIABILITY ZONE:  This is the "testing zone."  Participants will be tested on their newly acquired skill in using the MBSImP to successfully capture and profile swallowing impairment in adults.  Ten swallow studies must be scored.  The scores can be reviewed and changed as needed prior to submitting the full test.  Participants will have the ability to return to zones 1 and 2 as needed as they progress through the Reliability Assessment testing.   Once the scores are submitted for all 10 studies, immediate notification is provided of either successful completion (minimum of 80% accuracy) or of the need to repeat the reliability zone testing.  The reliability testing can be repeated as needed until a score of 80% or higher is achieved.
PATIENT DATA & REPORTS:  Once a participant has successfully completed the Reliability Zone, access is granted to the very functional "Patient Data & Reports" clinical area. Please see below.

Beyond the Training — Patient Data & Reports Clinician Tools

The MBSImP is much more than simply a training program!

The MBSImP has been designed to be a valuable resource to the clinician and also an invaluable resource to the profession of Speech-Language Pathology.  Patient Data access is granted at no additional cost to those who successfully pass the Reliability Zone testing. This area of MBSImP.com includes online databases and user tools that Registered MBSImP Clinicians can use daily to:

  • Maintain a database of their patients with dysphagia, consisting of de-identified data that includes diagnoses, MBSImP results, effectiveness of intervention and patient outcomes.
  • Generate assessment reports. These reports will be detailed and reflective of the study and comply with Joint Commission requirements for documentation.
  • Track patient progress and outcomes and demonstrate evidence for treatment.
  • Contribute to the first and only international data registry dedicated solely to swallowing dysfunction, providing an adjunct to research that has never existed, until now.
  • Access online forums for communication with other Registered MBSImP Clinicians around the world.

MBSImP Info & Notes:

  • Prerequisite: participants must have a degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • The MBSImP is validated for use in assessing the adult population, 18 years and older.
  • The training doesn't need to be completed in one sitting.  Participants have unlimited log-in access.
  • There are no time limitations for finishing this training and testing.
  • Both the training and Patient Data & Reports are completely web-based.  There is no software to buy or download.
  • The Reliability Zone may be repeated as needed to achieve 80% or better accuracy. (No re-testing fees.)
  • Registered MBSImP Clinician status is awarded for a period of 5 years from date of passing the online reliability testing.
  • Further training, testing, and tuition will be required to maintain Registered MBSImP Clinician status beyond the initial 5-year period.

Course Objectives

After completion of this online training, participants will be able to:

  1. List the 17 physiologic swallowing components comprising the MBSImP™©.
  2. Identify standardized terms for describing observations of the adult swallowing mechanism as seen on videofluoroscopic swallow studies.
  3. Explain the scoring scheme for each of the 17 physiologic components comprising the MBSImP.
  4. Apply the MBSImP scoring scheme to adult videofluoroscopic swallow studies.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to successfully score (with 80% accuracy) each of the 17 physiologic components when viewing videofluoroscopic swallow studies of adult patients.

A score of 80% or better must be received in the reliability zone
in order to receive a certificate of completion and be deemed a Registered MBSImP Clinician.

Prerequisite: participants must have a degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

Accreditation

This course is offered for 2.1 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional area).

Prerequisite: participants must have a degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

Per our longstanding procedures with ASHA, we submit CEU information to ASHA quarterly, so your CEUs will be reflected as completed on the last day of that quarter.  For instance, if you complete a course on December 7th, 2011, it will be reported to ASHA in January 2012, and it will be reflected in your ASHA account as completed on December 31st, 2011.  However, for submitting to your state board or for your own records, you will receive a certificate of completion with the actual completion date.
