Course Format: Text - including audio samples (which can be listened to online or downloaded as mp3 files) & references.

This e-course is designed to help speech-language pathologists work with individuals who speak with mild, moderate or severe accents and who desire to sound less foreign or nonstandard. SLPs will learn how to develop a foreign accent reduction program targeting reduction or elimination of any particular accent by non-native English speakers or for the neutralization of a regional accent by native English speakers. In either case, the goal is to attain conformity to the standard English dialect.

This e-course provides a brief overview of English phonology, rhythm, and grammar. Outlined are the necessary components of a foreign accent reduction program.  Also included are dozens of active website links—giving the participant access to therapy ideas, practical activities, quizzes, tests, games, lesson plans, tips for teachers and other resources.

Topics Covered:

  • Using English phonology to appropriately identify nonstandard sound patterns
  • Understanding the use of English rhythm in connected speech, including stress and intonation patterns
  • Understanding common grammatical forms that are difficult for non-native speakers of English
  • Understanding changes in communication in different conversational contexts
  • Identifying phonological and language features of English speakers from different cultural groups found within the US
  • Knowing what to look for in speech samples when evaluating regional or foreign accents
  • Incorporating appropriate goals and structure for foreign accent reduction programs
  • Developing therapy activities that are functional and effective

NOTE: This e-course utilizes audio; therefore a computer with speakers is required for enrollment.

Please note:  This eCourse is set up to be flexible to accomodate all schedules.  You do not have to complete this program in one sitting.  You can access the course materials as many times as you need to in order to complete all the sections.
