Teach the language skills needed
for face-to-face conversations!

The Color My Conversation program (CMC) is an engaging, multi-sensory teaching approach to help guide children through the conversation flow. Children will learn to navigate through a conversation starting at a basic greeting and working toward the most complex conversation that the child is capable of having. The holistic approach fosters development of social awareness, self-regulation, executive function, and meta-cognitive and meta-linguistic skills. This complete program includes a lot of fun, interactive activities that aid children in starting and maintaining a conversation.

CMC is a very dynamic program, and the instruction incorporates errorless learning in order to keep stress low and outcomes positive. Using the comprehensive manual on CD and online lesson support videos, you can easily and fully understand how to implement this program for student success. It's also adaptable to any room or group size or use with an individual student and over the period of time that works best. Made in the USA. Target ages K-7th grade. In-Depth Training Available >

Color My Conversation (CMC) 2nd Edition

A Multi-Sensory Approach For Everyone

CMC incorporates visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic strategies to teach social language and conversational concepts. Activities feature movement, song, rhyme, color coding, signing/gestures, beadwork, artwork, pictures/photographs, line drawings, worksheets, role plays, interactive game activities, and field assignments. Appropriate populations include: high-functioning autism, Asperger syndrome, LLD, language delayed, ADHD, fluency, articulation, children with mild intellectual disabilities, as well as children within the general population.

How It Works:

CMC Conversation Path

Beginner Level – Ages 5-12 years

The first three lessons of the CMC program are presented with a kinesthetic element.

  • "Conversation Path" floor pads that children will physically step on as they walk through the conversation. These pads can be written on with the included dry erasable markers.
  • A ball will be tossed back and forth to represent turn taking as well as to establish eye contact. Ribbon will also be used.
  • Students will learn simple greetings & farewells (including body language/nonverbal communication), short conversations, and long conversations (i.e. topics, comments, questions and topic changers).
  • A Wall Display will start to be built to represent the Conversation Path and should remain up as a visual support for the children.

NOTE: Adaptations are provided for children with intellectual disabilities.

Takes about 5 weeks to complete this level

CMC Conversation Path

CMC Take It To The Table

Intermediate Level – Ages 5-12 years

Here you begin to "Take It To The Table" while continuing to walk the Conversation Path and develop the Wall Display as children practice the new conversational features being introduced.

  • Students will learn about "WH" questions, Interrogative Reversal questions (i.e. Yes! No! Maybe So!), making comments count, how to become a topic changer pro, and how to speak loud and clear.
  • Worksheets, crafts, artwork, drill work and game activities are provided for each lesson.
  • Children will grow in confidence as they practice their use of the conversational features being presented and have an increased ability to have conversations on a wider array of topics!

NOTE: Lesson arrangements may need to be adapted for children with intellectual disabilities.

Takes about 6-8 weeks to complete.

CMC Game Board session

Advanced Level – 8-12 years

The multi-activity Color My Conversation Game is introduced where children will either actively play or observe and comment on those who are playing it.

  • This lesson focuses on improving a child's ability to initiate, maintain, or close topics using appropriate topic transitions and turn taking strategies using the 2-sided multi-activity CMC Game Board.
  • Students also practice taking the role of the primary listener or the primary speaker.

Takes about 3-5 weeks to complete.

CMC Bubble Connections

Expert Level – Variable ages

This lesson is intended for all ages, because its purpose is to identify the conversation skills that each child is capable of using and then supporting the transfer of those skills from the practice room to a natural setting.

  • Students practice conversations in the "real world."
  • You can also target conversations that have not been addressed (customized conversations) or require further skill development.
  • Customized conversations can be taught at any point after the Beginner Level.

CMC Beads

CMC Beading

Beads – Beads & Special Needs

A special lesson for our special children! Targeting the same goals as the Beginner Level, adaptations are provided to meet the needs of children who have intellectual disabilities. Such as:

  • Conversation Path stones may have no writing and might only show drawings or symbols.
  • Verbal instructions may be limited, and use of exaggerated gestures may be increased.
  • Limited amount of topics but a high level of repetition for each topic.
  • Sentence strips may be used to support grammar and sentence structure.
  • Goals for conversation features will be adjusted and repetitive in nature.
  • The Beading Activity is used to provide a visual support for carryover of the conversations being taught.
  • More use of the highly motivating and appreciated CMC Songs.

Sign Language & Gestures

The CMC program is multi-sensory. One teaching method that is implemented in the program is the use of signs and gestures. The intent is not to teach children a formal signing system but rather to provide visual supports for key concepts being presented in the lessons. The signs and gestures can be used at your discretion.

Why is the CMC program so effective for improving social skills?

1. Color My Conversation incorporates inquiry based learning!

Inquiry based learning fosters exporation, problem solving, discovery and dramatization. "Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand." – Chinese proverb

2. Color My Conversation connects!

  • Through a common language which is shared between educators, parents and children.
  • Through a hierarchy in lesson development which moves from basic greetings to more complex social interactions.
  • Through cross cultural experiential learning opportunities between home, school and community.

3. Color My Conversation emphasizes the value of social emotional awareness!

Social emotional development fosters a child's awareness for self (i.e. self-concepts, self-reliance, and self-regulation) and awareness of others (i.e. empathy). "If we want our children to care about their conversations with us – We have to matter to them." – R. Delmonico

4. Color My Conversation provides engaging activities for all learning styles!

Through the use of multi-sensory teaching methods, lessons inspire ideas (i.e. brainstorming), provide knowledge (i.e. social rules), build relationships (i.e. role plays), and ignite independent learning (i.e. project development).

5. Color My Conversation focuses on leading others to lead another and/or leading others to lead self!

Through the lesson activities, the children are given direct and indirect activities to support the development of self-leadership and the opportunity to lead others. "When we are working on social language, it is not enough to say that we are helping our children learn how to have a conversation. We are literally changing lives...One Conversation at a time!" – R. Delmonico

Author:

Rosslyn Delmonico, MA, RSLP, CCC-SLP, has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 35 years both within the private and public school systems, and has had her own private practice since 1991. Through her years of experience, she has worked almost exclusively with school-age children, with her main focus of interest being on those with language impairments.

Rosslyn saw a need for a connected and comprehensive social language program, one which would take language-impaired children from a basic greeting to the most complex conversation that they were capable of having.  In 2006, she started developing a speech-language therapy tool for children within her caseload called Color My Conversation.  Since that time, it has continued to emerge as a social language based program applicable for both special needs and general education children.

Rosslyn discovered that her best teaching practices developed over her years of experience included movement, color, song, and hands on learning.  If the children were having fun, they were engaged. When they were engaged, they were learning! Her multisensory approach to teaching has proven to be highly effective with her students. Rosslyn's personal philosophy is that all children are special, can learn, and have something to give the world through their unique personalities.

—Shannon (Speechy Musings) 8/22/2015

"I run Social Skills camps and groups for children between the ages of 6-11 who have a range of diagnoses including Autism, ADD, fluency disorders, and language disorders. We use the Color My Conversation (CMC) curriculum as it provides the kids a practical multi-sensory method for learning where, when, and how to have successful conversations with peers and adults. I notice that the children are better able to carry on conversations about non-preferred topics, ask questions, and use comments to show their partners that they are listening and caring about what others are sharing. They love to walk the conversation path and it gets the kids moving and learning. I notice that their anxiety level when conversing with peers is lower after training. Giving out tokens for comments and questions during the game provides a system for measuring progress as well."

"I attended a CMC Conference 2 years ago and use the program in some capacity daily in my public school practice. I have also led staff trainings on CMC so that Teachers and Instructional Assistants could bring these skills into the classroom. The multi-sensory approach has been a huge benefit to my students and each one can participate at some level. I have also received a parent report that her child had a "real" telephone conversation with her grandmother for the first time after repeated practice. With my current work dynamic, I acutally used a push-in model with one of my classes and we practiced CMC every Friday morning and then the Teacher was able to reinforce the skill taught throughout her day. Color My Conversation has also been a wonderful tool in helping neurotypical students participate in a structured conversation with my students in a safe and guided way that generated practice, success, and for some, beginning of friendships. I appreciate CMC and will continue to use it."

"I've already had success using Color My Conversation! It has helped patients have a conversation that previously did not seem to understand the flow of conversation. Great visuals and activities that motivated them to talk."

"Color My Conversation brings us back to the roots of how to communicate effectively face to face. It has the potential to powerfully impact our next generation of children."
—Speech-Language Pathologist, 2014

"I’ve noticed several remarkable changes in 'A' since he began using the Color My Conversation program with Rosslyn. The first significant change, and a real “a-ha” moment for 'A', was when he finally understood the importance of eye contact. This small detail changed everything for him. For the first time in his life, he began to engage with the people around him and, more importantly (to him) began to get friendly, interested responses in return. For me, a huge encouragement has been the feedback I’ve received from many of my friends, most of whom do not know that 'A' is receiving any kind of therapy. Several have taken the time to seek me out to tell me that they’ve seen a real change in him. They’ve told me of the great conversations they’ve had - and most have commented that this is something very new in their relationship with him. Some have been a little more blunt and have told me he doesn’t talk nonsense anymore, and they feel that they can really talk to him now and meet the real 'A'. One mother of children with severe relational issues sought me out to ask me what I had done. Whatever it was, she wanted it! It really isn’t an exaggeration to say this program has begun to change 'A’s life. He has confidence, he is able to engage in one to one conversation, and AMAZINGLY he has friends for the first time ever. In the past, kids have avoided him and refused his invitations to hang out in our home because they found him odd and hard work; but now they actively seek him out and respond to his social invitations. As a mother, there are no words to describe what it’s like to see your desperately lonely, socially awkward (formerly) child interact with friends for the first time. We love Color My Conversation."
—Parent, 2014

"Anyone interested in improving social and life skills for K-7 students should give this curriculum a serious look. Two thumbs up!"
—Teacher, 2014

"I have a child with Asperger's Syndrome and even though he is a genius, he had no idea how to "act appropriately" with his peers. He did not possess the tools to properly initiate conversation with people. He was unable to express himself through words or facial recognition. In a nutshell, he was a grumpy looking, unapproachable boy who estranged himself from people through hyper-focusing on books and self-interest. We were referred to Rosslyn Delmonico through a friend because I was having anxiety about my son having difficulty transitioning into the next level of school and social obligation (high school). Rosslyn worked hard with my son that summer. Through the Color My Conversation program, he was given the tools to initiate basic conversations, introduce preferred topics and use proper eye contact and body language. The pivotal point was when he was able to show emotion through facial expressions, which he had very much struggled with. With all of this, he was able to transition into high school in a socially acceptable manner, which enabled him to make friends, and excel profusely. I know for a fact that my son would not be the same person socially, emotionally and in general if it were not for Rosslyn Delmonico and her extraordinary Color My Conversation. My son is proud to be graduating this year, with full academic credits, and is looking forward to continuing his education within the culinary arts."

"I was able to use your program, Color My Conversation, with several of my kids at school last year. It really helped a lot of my kids, especially the ones who needed multiple cues to complete tasks. Most of my kids really liked the pictures selected for the program. Sometimes I would use these for language tasks as well.

I recalled you saying that some of the steps are better when used in a class setting and I had one teacher who started to integrate conversation practice into the school day every day. I was able to collaborate with her and share some of your resources. I can't tell you enough how grateful I am for Color My Conversation!"
