 SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

There are over 5 million individuals in the US living with disability from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and this number swells during times of war. This seminar will provide rehabilitation professionals with evidence on which to base management decisions for attention, memory, language, executive functions, and metacognitive impairments after TBI. An update on structural and functional neuroimaging of the frontal lobes will be provided first. Then, types and levels of evidence will be discussed, including the process through which clinical recommendations are developed. Importantly, rehabilitation professionals will be provided with knowledge and skills for critiquing systematic-based evidence reviews.

Current best practice using formal and informal assessment will be described. Evidence-based intervention will be highlighted, directed at skill sets where attention, memory, strategy use, unawareness and other metacognitive processes interact. Assessment and intervention case examples will be provided throughout the two days from which professionals can create assessment protocols and treatment goals based on a balanced perspective of clinical judgment and research-based evidence. Clinicians will leave with resources for maintaining their knowledge and skills for managing cognitive and communication disorders after TBI.
