  • SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

    Empowered with the right information and resources, managing and treating elderly clients with dysphagia can be very rewarding. This clinically relevant seminar brings together leading dysphagia experts to examine current research and best practice when addressing the needs of elderly clients with swallowing disorders. Discussion will focus on matching specific treatments with specific swallowing disorders and the decision-making process when employing diet modification, exercise, postures, positioning, maneuvers, or specific techniques related to cognitive loss. The recommendation of non-oral feedings will also be discussed.

    Included will be a specific segment addressing esophageal disorders to help the SLP know when to refer to other health care professionals. Special considerations and treatment suggestions when implementing programs for patients with cognitive loss will be covered. Also included will be a session on pharmacology and dysphagia. Common diagnostic groups and targeted interventions appropriate for these disorders will be discussed for clients with CVA, Parkinson's disease, Dementia, COPD, ALS, MD and MS.

    Cancellation Policy & Late Registration

    Registration Cancellation Policy:

    Tuition will be refunded less a $25 processing fee if emailed notification is received by NSS up to two weeks prior to the seminar date. Two weeks to 72 hours prior to seminar date: 50% refund; 72 hours or less: no refund. NSS reserves the right to cancel the event up to 7 days prior to the seminar date. If cancelled by NSS full tuition refunds will be issued. Substitutions are permitted if NSS is notified in advance by phone or email.

    Late Registration Fee:

    Add $20 to tuition rate if registration is received within
    2 weeks of the seminar date.

    Speaker Profile

    Reza Shaker, MD, is an internationally recognized gastroenterologist and an accomplished researcher of dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and cerebral cortical control of gastrointestinal sensory motor function. He is Professor of Medicine, Radiology, and Otolaryngology; Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology; and Director of the Digestive Disease Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. His research has led to some of the seminal discoveries in the area of airway protection and opened new avenues of investigation and treatment of dysphagia.


    Roxann Diez Gross, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a leading expert, accomplished researcher, and frequently invited international lecturer on tracheostomy-dependent patients. Prior to becoming the Research Manager at The Children's Institute, she was the Director of the Swallowing Disorders Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as well as an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology in the School of Medicine. She is now an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh. She has published several scientific papers and clinical book chapters. Her primary area of research examines interactions between breathing and swallowing in individuals with indwelling tracheostomy tubes, neurologic impairments and respiratory disease.


    Jacqueline A. Hind, MS, CCC-SLP, BRS-S, is an accomplished clinician, researcher and inventor. Her work in adult dysphagia has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and she was a regional principal investigator for the largest NIH-funded, randomized clinical trial in swallowing. Ms. Hind is an Outreach Program Manager and Coordinator of the Swallowing Speech And Dining Enhancement Program (SSWAL-ADE) at the University of Wisconsin and at the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center within the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI.


    Paula Leslie, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a dysphagia clinician, researcher, and educator. She is an Associate Professor of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh, and coordinates the department’s Clinical Doctorate in Medical Speech-Language Pathology. Dr. Leslie conducts research and lectures internationally on the topics of dysphagia and aging, ethics and end-of-life decisions in vulnerable populations, and the fundamentals of evidence-based practice.


    Peter Johnson, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an author, lecturer and clinician with experience in acute care hospitals, home care, outpatient clinics and long-term care. He lectures nationally on cognition and dysphagia. Dr. Johnson is the Speech Mentor with Select Medical, for which he develops new clinical programs, conducts CE seminars, provides clinician mentoring nationally and maintains the clinic hotline. He is also active with the Florida Association of Speech-Language Pathology, the Florida Department of Health/Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and with ASHA's Special Interest Divisions.  Dr. Johnson is also adjunct faculty and dissertation chair at Nova Southeastern University.  Among other publications he is co-author of the text Drugs and Dysphagia: How Medications Affect Eating and Swallowing.


    Darlene Graner, SLP.D, CCC-SLP, BRS-S, is a clinical Speech-Language Pathologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She has over 30 years clinical experience, with expertise in evaluating and managing dysphagia associated with treatments for head & neck cancer and in patients with progressive neurological diseases. As a member of a certified ALS team for over 10 years she has assisted hundreds of patients with ALS in managing their dysphagia.


    Leslie Mahler, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Rhode Island where she teaches courses in cognitive disorders, voice disorders, dysphagia, motor speech aspects of communication, and phonetics. Dr. Mahler’s current research interests are in behavioral treatment of dysarthria following stroke, intensive voice treatment for individuals with Parkinson’s disease, and individuals with unilateral vocal fold paralysis.
