  • SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

    This unique seminar offers both the Speech-Language Pathologist's and the Respiratory Therapist's perspective on treating tracheostomy and ventilator-dependent patients. Oropharyngeal swallowing function will be covered with an emphasis on the interaction between deglutition, secretion management and respiratory performance. Special topics include a pertinent research review, the subglottic pressure for swallowing, and methods to re-establish airflow to the upper airway. Tracheostomy tube variations and mechanical ventilation will be fully explained.

    Multidisciplinary troubleshooting and treatment planning ideas that will facilitate attainment of speech, swallowing and vent-weaning goals will be provided. Included will be a hands-on lab session featuring a ventilator and a collection of trachs, allowing participants an opportunity to facilitate functional learning, ask questions, and problem solve in relation to their respective disciplines and facilities. The ultimate goal of this seminar is to boost participant knowledge and confidence in working with this challenging population.



    Cancellation Policy & Late Registration

    Registration Cancellation Policy:

    Tuition will be refunded less a $25 processing fee if emailed notification is received by NSS up to two weeks prior to the seminar date. Two weeks to 72 hours prior to seminar date: 50% refund; 72 hours or less: no refund. NSS reserves the right to cancel the event up to 7 days prior to the seminar date. If cancelled by NSS full tuition refunds will be issued. Substitutions are permitted if NSS is notified in advance by phone or email.

    Late Registration Fee:

    Add $20 to tuition rate if registration is received within
    2 weeks of the seminar date.

    Speaker Profile

    Roxann Diez Gross, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a leading expert, accomplished researcher, and frequently invited international lecturer on tracheostomy-dependent patients. Prior to becoming the Research Manager at The Children's Institute, she was the Director of the Swallowing Disorders Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as well as an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology in the School of Medicine. She is now an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh. She has published several scientific papers and clinical book chapters. Her primary area of research examines interactions between breathing and swallowing in individuals with indwelling tracheostomy tubes, neurologic impairments and respiratory disease.


    Kathleen A. Lane, RRT, CPFT, is a Respiratory Therapist and Manager of the Critical Care Respiratory Therapy Department at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. She has over 20 years of clinical experience. Ms. Lane has been a full-time clinical educator for the past 9 years, educating physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and speech-language pathologists in the area of tracheostomy and ventilator management.
