SEMINAR DESCRIPTION: This unique seminar offers both the Speech-Language Pathologist's and the Respiratory Therapist's perspective on treating tracheostomy and ventilator-dependent patients. Oropharyngeal swallowing function will be covered with an emphasis on the interaction between deglutition, secretion management and respiratory performance. Special topics include a pertinent research review, the subglottic pressure for swallowing, and methods to re-establish airflow to the upper airway. Tracheostomy tube variations and mechanical ventilation will be fully explained. Multidisciplinary troubleshooting and treatment planning ideas that will facilitate attainment of speech, swallowing and vent-weaning goals will be provided. Included will be a hands-on lab session featuring a ventilator and a collection of trachs, allowing participants an opportunity to facilitate functional learning, ask questions, and problem solve in relation to their respective disciplines and facilities.
