This speech-language pathology continuing education conference is offered for 1.0 ASHA CEUs. This clinically focused conference will examine the latest evidence-based practice related to treating dysphagic patients with neurological disorders and pulmonary diseases. The conference begins with a pertinent review of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system as related to dysphagia. A model for determining whether a patient's aspiration pneumonia is dysphagia-related will be discussed to better clarify the role of the Speech-Language Pathologist. Information will be presented on interpreting pulmonary function tests as well as treatments for respiratory diseases. Covered will also be a decision-making process for recommending oral vs non-oral nutrition and how to hydrate patients including when to allow free water. Presented will be evidence-based treatments for specific diagnostic groups, including COPD, stroke, MS, ALS, Parkinson's disease and dementia. Also covered will be end-of-life issues to help the SLP understand when, and under what conditions, to discharge patients.
