  • Acid Reflux Disease - Effects on Swallowing
  • Interventions for Sensory and Motor Swallowing Disorders
  • Pharmacology and Dysphagia
  • Over 98% of Past Attendees Would Recommend This Seminar to a Colleague
  • SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

Swallowing does not end at the pharynx. In fact, research has shown that 30% or more of problems in the pharynx can be related to problems in the esophagus. Not screening the esophagus for obvious abnormalities that need referral to appropriate healthcare professionals can place patients with dysphagia at risk for misdiagnosis and serious health consequences. Not understanding the interrelatedness of the oropharynx and esophagus can also result in poor management and poor treatment outcomes.

This clinically focused seminar will examine all three stages of the swallow (oral-pharyngeal-esophageal) to ensure that patients with dysphagia receive a comprehensive swallow examination and appropriate treatment and management recommendations. Assessment of the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of dysphagia evaluation and treatment tools will also be discussed to ensure evidence-based and best practice. In addition, a hierarchy of risk factors related to aspiration pneumonia will be presented to guide the dysphagia clinician toward more effective aspiration prevention programs. The ultimate goal of this seminar is to improve the quality of care of patients with dysphagia through a more comprehensive model of service delivery.
