SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

This speech-language pathology seminar is offered for 1.0 ASHA CEUs. This seminar will examine factors that affect communication and swallowing performance for patients with tracheostomy tubes with and without mechanical ventilation. The characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of specific tracheostomy tubes and speaking valves will be explained to ensure best practice.

Methods to re-establish airflow to the upper airway will be discussed and demonstrated. In addition, the role of subglottic pressure for safe swallow will be explained. SLP "must knows" related to patients on mechanical ventilation will be presented as well as issues related to secretion management. Diagnostic groups discussed will include head and neck cancer (including post-laryngectomy), COPD and others. Assessment procedures, treatment planning and implementation, as well as trach troubleshooting techniques will be presented.

Registration Cancellation Policy:

Tuition will be refunded less a $25 processing fee if emailed notification is received by NSS up to two weeks prior to the seminar date. Two weeks to 72 hours prior to seminar date: 50% refund; 72 hours or less: no refund. NSS reserves the right to cancel the event up to 7 days prior to the seminar date. If cancelled by NSS full tuition refunds will be issued. Substitutions are permitted if NSS is notified in advance by phone or email.

Late Registration Fee:

Add $20 to tuition rate if registration is received within
2 weeks of the seminar date.

    Speaker Profile

    Roxann Diez Gross, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a leading expert, accomplished researcher, and frequently invited international lecturer on tracheostomy-dependent patients. Prior to becoming the Research Manager at The Children's Institute, she was the Director of the Swallowing Disorders Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as well as an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology in the School of Medicine. She is now an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh. She has published several scientific papers and clinical book chapters. Her primary area of research examines interactions between breathing and swallowing in individuals with indwelling tracheostomy tubes, neurologic impairments and respiratory disease.

    ASHA CEUS: Attendees must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:

    • Current ASHA Member
    • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
    • Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology
    • Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
    • Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
    • Engaged in a Clinical Fellowship under the supervision of an individual with their ASHA CCC
    • Currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program in SLP or audiology
