SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

This clinically focused seminar will examine the latest clinical research related to treating frail and complex elderly patients with dysphagia.  A model for determining whether a patient’s “aspiration pneumonia” is dysphagia-related will be discussed to better clarify the role of the Speech-Language Pathologist. Information will be presented on interpreting pulmonary function tests as well as treatments for respiratory diseases.  Covered will also be a decision-making process for recommending oral vs non-oral nutrition and how to hydrate patients including when to allow free water. Additionally, treatments for specific diagnostic groups will be presented as well as end-of-life issues to help the Speech-Language Pathologist understand when, and under what conditions, to discharge patients.
