SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

This seminar will help Speech-Language Pathologists more effectively identify and intervene with infants and toddlers with autism spectrum disorders. Through video clips and discussion, participants will become more familiar with the types and variability of symptoms of autism spectrum disorders in children under the age of three years.  Clinical tools available to SLPs for screening and diagnosis of autism in infants and toddlers will be described, including guidelines for interpreting the results. Participants will practice sharing screening or diagnostic results with parents through demonstration and role playing. The instructors will use case examples of toddlers with autism to illustrate the integration of research evidence, clinician expertise, and family wisdom and values into an evidence-based process of planning early intervention.

Speaker Profile

Linda R. Watson, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Watson brings over 25 years of clinical and research experience focusing on the social-communicative characteristics of young children with ASD and interventions to maximize communication skills in these children by age five years. She has published and presented extensively on these topics. Along with her UNC colleagues—Dr. Elizabeth Crais, Dr. Grace Baranek, and Dr. Steve Reznick—Dr. Watson has worked for the past 10 years to study the symptoms of autism as they emerge in infancy and to develop a screening tool to identify one-year-olds who are at-risk for autism.  The team is also investigating the efficacy of home-based early intervention for one-year-olds who are at-risk for autism. In another current effort, Dr. Watson and her colleagues are developing and testing an intervention for preschool children with autism in public school classrooms to assist education teams in more effectively addressing key social, communication, and play skills.

Elizabeth Crais, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a Professor in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Dr. Crais has been active within early intervention for over 35 years as a speech-language pathologist, university professor, clinical supervisor, and researcher.  She has published a range of articles and book chapters and made numerous presentations dealing with young children with disabilities and their families.  Her research focuses on the prelinguistic behaviors of young, typically developing children as well as those with or at-risk for autism, particularly early gestural and play behaviors and their impact on current and later communication skills.  She works closely with Drs. Linda Watson, Grace Baranek, and Steve Reznick on a variety of research projects targeting early identification and intervention with young children with autism.
