DESCRIPTION:

This speech pathology conference is offered for 1.2 ASHA CEUs. This clinically focused conference will examine a range of cognitive disorders that occur after acquired acute brain injury (TBI), as well as disorders of the aging brain, including Alzheimer's dementia. The most recent clinical research on cognitive rehabilitation from the field of neuropsychology will be presented and used to evaluate treatment options that hold most promise for positive functional outcomes. The implications of the demands placed on a patient's memory systems during treatments will also be highlighted, as well as a rationale for selecting specific memory systems for specific therapy tasks.  New techniques to increase attention for task completion will also be presented.

Speaker Profile

Robert G. Winningham, PhD, specializes in applied memory abilities and conducts research on the cognitive abilities of older adults. This clinical research has led to the development of novel approaches that increase the efficiency of SLPs and OTs in their work with persons with brain injury including those with TBI and progressive cognitive loss associated with aging and dementia. Dr. Winningham has given more than 350 invited presentations on cognitive rehabilitation. Currently he is Co-Director of the Geriatric Wellness Center and Chair of the Psychology Division at Western Oregon University.

Donald MacLennan, MA, CCC-SLP, is a clinician with the Minneapolis VA Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Program working with veterans to establish community independence. He has 28 years of experience working with people with TBI, providing cognitive rehabilitation across acute, outpatient, community reentry, and home care settings.  Mr. MacLennan was recently involved in a joint project with VA and Department of Defense to provide guidelines to SLPs for treating TBI.  In 2008 he received the Rick L. Bollinger Clinician of the Year Award, a national award recognizing clinical excellence within the VA.

Jerry Hoepner, PhD, CCC-SLP, presents nationally on the topics of cognitive and communication disorders resulting from brain injury and on acquired language disorders in aphasia.  Dr. Hoepner is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire.   His current research examines the role of partners in supporting the success of everyday interactions of individuals with traumatic brain injury. Clinically, Dr. Hoepner specializes in the use of routines to reduce demands on working memory and executive functions.

ASHA CEUS: Attendees must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:

• Current ASHA Member
• ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
• Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology
• Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
• Credentialed by a national regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
• Engaged in a Clinical Fellowship under the supervision of an individual with their ASHA CCC
• Currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program in SLP or audiology
