SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

Children can be dismissed from speech therapy with improved articulation skills and word intelligibility but still demonstrate high risk for school failure because of unremediated deficits in letter-sound association and/or poor oral and written language skills. This treatment-focused seminar brings together two unique intervention approaches that can put struggling students on a fast track to classroom success. The interventions presented can be used with many student groups including speech delay, autism, apraxia of speech, and students learning English.

Building Foundational Literacy Skills

The morning session begins with a discussion of the brain’s four processors. Research on early literacy development suggests that targeting the orthographic processor first, rather than the phonological processor, may be a more effective approach to teaching letter-sound correlation and literacy skills. Participants will learn orthographic instruction (printed cues) and how "starting with the letter" can suddenly bring sounds and words to life for children. This highly successful approach can help students achieve speech and language goals while at the same time building a strong literacy foundation.

Expanding Oral & Written Expression

Frustrated with receiving one-word answers or blank looks from students when it comes to describing vocabulary or describing an object or event? The afternoon session will explain how the brain functions in expanding oral and written expression. Based on this knowledge, introduced will be a multi-sensory instruction approach to target those students who struggle with organizing and expanding their thoughts. Specific areas addressed will be oral expression, writing from prior knowledge, vocabulary comprehension, defining & describing skills, similarities & differences, categorization, and more. The ultimate goal of this seminar is to help participants achieve more therapy goals and in less time.

She began her career in the public school setting where she focused on developing and teaching language strategies to facilitate academic success. Her interest and continued study of language processing and multi-sensory approaches to learning have led to the development of the Expanding ExpressionProgram for improved oral and written language. The EET Program draws on the latest research and provides a multi-sensory approach to facilitate students' classroom success. As a presenter at the school district, state and national levels, Sara provides educators with insight into learning and demonstrates strategies to use with all children. Her publications include the Expanding Expression Tool, the Expanding ExpressionExtension Manual, and E.E.T.C.H.Y. Sara resides in Bay City, Michigan with her husband and two children.

Keli Richmond, MS, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist specializing in early literacy development. She has degrees in both speech-language pathology and audiology, a minor in special education and a teaching license. Keli has over 14 years experience in the speech and literacy disciplines. She began her career in the medical field with an emphasis on neurological disorders. Currently, she focuses on therapy techniques and promotes literacy skills for preschool through middle school children. Keli presents nationwide at in-services, seminars and state and national conventions promoting orthographic instruction (printed cues) to improve speech intelligibility and enhance literacy skills.

She is the author of the Literacy Speaks!® program. Literacy Speaks!® is a comprehensive program driven by orthographic techniques. Literacy Speaks!® improves speech intelligibility and expands language knowledge while promoting a strong literacy foundation—all simultaneously. Past Participant Comments

Comments from Literacy Speaks!® Users

"I attended your conference in February in Indianapolis. I have one student who I was particularly "stumped" with and I began using your program with him. What a difference! His DIBELS scores for phoneme seg have gone from 0-30 since and alphabetic principal from 0-20 all [in two months]. ...It is so exciting to see how much he loves the take home books. I have to have one for him each speech session...if not, he is very disappointed. As I walk him back to his Kindergarten class, he stops anyone he can find in the hallway and asks them if they would like to hear him read! You have created quite a unique and EFFECTIVE program. For all the very busy SLPs out there who needed a program like this, I thank you."

"This program is highly successful for children that are making little or no progress with traditional therapy. I observed dramatic improvements in my students with Final Consonant Deletion. Literacy Speaks not only remediates difficult errors patterns, it creates phonemic awareness!"

"After using the Literacy Speaks materials for only a few weeks, my young students began to enjoy looking for letters. Sounds in a particular word position that children have struggled with for a long time just 'seemed to click.' With the use of the Literacy Speaks program, my students can see where sounds are located in words."

"I was excited to find that 7 out of 9 of my self-contained special education preschoolers moved onto general education kindergarten and are either no longer eligible for special education services or will receive only minimal support as a result of consistently using Literacy Speaks in my classroom. My 4-year-olds are identifying letters and sounds while increasing their language skills and remarkably, non-verbal 3-year-olds are matching letters. Literacy Speaks has inspired a diverse group of students with a variety of learning and achievement."

"It has been absolutely amazing the progress our children have made from this program!" "I have taught at-risk preschoolers for many years, and I am thrilled to say that Literacy Speaks has been the most successful literacy approach I have ever used. Not only did my English speakers make remarkable strides in letter/sound correlations, but even my ESL students markedly improved their literacy and language skills. And the children were fully engaged throughout the process! A great program!"

Comments from Expanding Expression™ Tool Users

"The EET is a simple yet brilliant tool for children. The genius is in its simplicity. The brilliance is in the research. This attractive, durable creation is exactly what all children need to maximize their literacy potential. The manual is easy to read, easy to follow and generic enough for all subject use. Expanding Expression Tool must be a part of every classroom."

"I believe the EET can be an excellent tool for the elementary teacher to use to aid the student in being competent in writing a detailed paragraph about one main idea. I have used this in my third grade class. In the beginning, the students would write short, simple sentences. Now, many can write at length on any given topic."

"As a literacy coach, it is my job to provide professional development to teachers. One of the biggest challenges I face is finding ways to provide teachers with techniques that motivate students to write and write well. The EET does just that. In one first time 45 minute lesson in a fourth grade classroom, the students’ writing went from ones to threes and fours using the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) rubric to assess. It not only increased and improved word choice, it also kept every student on topic. It is a phenomenal tool with remarkable results! I am in the process of introducing the EET to every teacher I work with. The multi-sensory approach reaches even the most difficult to work with students. The EET is a must have for every teacher at every grade level"

"We are truly enjoying the EET and it is making a world of difference in the students. Keep up the great work and what a great contribution for kids."

"You’ve made such a huge impact on so many children…thank you for your creativity and sharing of your idea!"
