 SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

This speech therapy continuing education seminar is offered for 0.6 ASHA CEUs. Providing the encouragement and skill for young children to produce verbal language is the challenge speech-language pathologists experience each time a young, nonverbal child is referred for evaluation and therapy. This clinically focused seminar will help participants determine where to begin therapy. Options for treatment are many. This seminar will look at why including an assessment of the oral motor system can provide significant information about the child's motor skills and motor planning as an indicator to why a child may not be using verbal language. An overview of oral motor and feeding skills to determine a child's needs from an oral motor perspective will be presented as well as tactile methods for eliciting early speech. Similarly, a look at interactive skills including attention, engagement, communicative intent, imitation, and turn taking will help attendees determine a child's needs in those areas.

Practical techniques and activities including music to increase a child's ability and desire to interact as well as how to include techniques using the principles of oral placement therapy (OPT) and tactile teaching methods will be presented and demonstrated via video examples. Suggestions for involving parents and establishing home programs will also be part of this informative program. Parent teaching strategies using the acronym, WE CAN TALK, will be given to attendees reinforcing the belief that parents are valuable and essential teachers. Focus will be children ages 2-5.
