DESCRIPTION: This speech pathology conference is offered for 1.2 ASHA CEUs. This informative conference will include evidence-based methods and best practice to transition children on the autism spectrum from speech to language to literacy. Day one will focus on building communication and conversation skills. Participants will learn strategies to reduce problem behavior and how to select motivators to encourage communication. Discussed will be a rationale for selecting a core vocabulary to establish functional communication, including whether or not to incorporate nonverbal interventions, and also strategies for shaping verbal communication. Participants will learn strategies to build conversation prerequisite skills including requesting, labeling, intraverbal language skills, and the ability to answer WH questions.
Day two will focus on literacy skills and reading comprehension challenges. First, participants will learn how orthographic instruction (printed cues) can be used to effectively target the brain's processors to build letter-sound correlation and establish foundational literacy skills. Participants will then learn why proficiency in the concept of narrative is so vital to a child's academic success and how to use story mapping to aid children in understanding and producing both personal and fictional narratives. The ultimate goal of this conference is to help clinicians who work with children on the autism spectrum to achieve positive treatment outcomes. TUITION:
