Description

Workout Book group session

Learn strategies to help children with apraxia of speech begin progressing immediately from a simple core vocabulary toward phrases and sentences.

Children who may have an adequate repertoire of consonants and vowels in isolation may not be able to coordinate the oral motor movements necessary to produce and combine these phonemes to form syllables, words, phrases, and sentences on volitional control. These children may be unable to speak or may be unintelligible speakers. They may even have difficulty executing the oral motor movements necessary to produce isolated phonemes. These are the children who can benefit from the techniques taught in this course.

This clinical presentation will focus on evaluation and treatment strategies for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) using the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) methods. It will include defining CAS, establishing motivation, using reinforcement, implementing and fading cues, and scripting functional expressive language. It will also include implementing the principles of motor learning for practice schedules and how to move from the acquisition stage to the retention stage of learning to be an effective vocal communicator.

The methods, strategies, and techniques presented in this program follow the most current research in CAS and will provide clinicians with the information they need to help children with CAS progress from a simple core vocabulary to phrases and eventually to sentences and conversational speech. In addition, treatment videos will be used to enhance the learning experience.

The main focus will be children ages 2-6 years. Offered for 0.6 ASHA CEUs.  ✔ Purchase Orders Accepted!

Content Disclosure: This presentation will focus exclusively on the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol. Other treatment approaches will receive limited or no coverage during this lecture. Presenter financial and non-financial disclosures may be found by clicking on the Presenter & Disclosures tab.

Speaker Profile

Nancy Kaufman,

MA, CCC-SLP

Since 1979, Nancy Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP, has dedicated herself to establishing the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP), a treatment approach to help children become effective vocal communicators. The K-SLP has evolved over the years to include the most current research in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), motor learning, and applied behavior analysis (ABA), and its methods and materials are used by speech-language pathologists worldwide. In addition, many ABA specialists have adopted the K-SLP for children with autism spectrum disorders.

Nancy lectures locally, nationally, and internationally on the subject of CAS and other speech sound disorders in children. Families from around the country and the world travel to the Kaufman Children's Center for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor, and Social Connections, Inc (KCC) in West Bloomfield, Michigan to participate in intensive, specialized therapy programs. The KCC continues to grow, offering renowned speech, language, occupational therapy, sensory integration, and applied behavior analysis (ABA) center and home-based autism programs.

Nancy serves on the professional advisory board of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA), on the board of visitors of Wayne State University's Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development, and is the speech-language pathologist consultant for the Parish School and Carruth Center in Houston, Texas, and Suburban Speech Center in Short Hills, New Jersey.

Nancy has been honored by both of her alma maters: she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Wayne State University in 2015 and the Outstanding Alumni Award from Michigan State University in 2010. She was awarded the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA) Distinguished Service Award in 2011 and the West Bloomfield Township Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Business Person of the Year Award in 2015. She was also recognized by the Lawrence Technological University Leaders & Innovators program. The KCC has received MSHA's Clinical Service Award and Corp! Magazine's Best of Michigan Business Award. Nancy has three grown children and resides with her husband in West Bloomfield, Michigan.
