SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:
This empowering two-day seminar will examine the current literature on teaching children with developmental challenges to speak. Four leading experts in speech acquisition will explore communication challenges and their solutions associated with autism, apraxia of speech, Down syndrome, and other populations. The latest research on the neuroscience of speech acquisition will be discussed to help participants become more effective in treatment planning and technique selection.
Also covered will be differential diagnosis of speech disorders, giving participants the knowledge to select and implement the most effective interventions. In addition, the rationale for incorporating word simplification, systematic reinforcement and oral-placement exercises will be discussed to help participants master the process of developing intervention programs that result in functional verbal outcomes. (Focus will be children ages 2-10.)

Registration Cancellation Policy:
Tuition will be refunded less a $25 processing fee if emailed notification is received by NSS up to two weeks prior to the seminar date.
Two weeks to 72 hours prior to seminar date: 50% refund; 72 hours or less: no refund. NSS reserves the right to cancel the
event up to 7 days prior to the seminar date. If cancelled by NSS full tuition refunds will be issued.

Speaker Profile

Nancy R. Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP, is the owner and Director of the Kaufman Children's Center for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor, and Social Connections, Inc. located in West Bloomfield, MI. Since 1979, Nancy has dedicated herself to establishing the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP), a treatment approach to help children become effective vocal communicators. She serves on the Professional Advisory Board of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) and is the Speech and Language Pathologist Consultant for the Parish School and Carruth Center in Houston, TX. Nancy was the recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and she received the 2010 Outstanding Alumni Award from Michigan State University College of Communication Arts & Sciences. The Kaufman Children's Center (KCC) received the Clinical Service Award from the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Nancy is also an honoree of the Lawrence Technological University Leaders & Innovators program.
She is the author of the Kaufman Speech Praxis Test for Children, the K-SLP Treatment Kits for Children, the K-SLP Workout Book, the K-SLP Mutt Family Language Builder, the K-SLP Instructional DVD Training Program, and co-author of K&K Sign to Talk: Nouns and K&K Sign to Talk: Verbs. Nancy lectures nationally and internationally on the subject of childhood apraxia of speech and other speech sound disorders in children. Many specialists in the field of applied verbal behavior (AVB) have adopted the K-SLP for children with autism spectrum disorders. Families from around the United States and the world travel to the KCC to participate in intensive and specialized therapy programs. Nancy received her B.A. at Michigan State University and M.A. at Wayne State University, having been awarded a graduate assistantship. The KCC continues to grow and has earned a reputation for excellence, warmth, and successful outcomes. Nancy has three grown children and resides with her husband in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Tamara S. Kasper, MS, CCC-SLP, BCBA, is a Speech-Language Pathologist with 20 years experience working with children with challenging behaviors. Tamara's commitment to the children she serves led her to pursue treatment methods outside the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Under the mentorship of renowned Behavior Analyst Dr. Vincent Carbone and his protégé, Tamara became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. She has also completed advanced training in application of Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior, Greenspan's DIR approach, and Kaufman's strategies for apraxia of speech.
Tamara is a frequently invited international lecturer, having treated clients and trained professionals in England, Ireland, Greece and other countries. She enthusiastically shares her unique approaches and her outside-the-box intervention techniques that are successful in building functional verbal behavior for children on the autism spectrum. Tamara is also Director of The Center for Autism Treatment near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a center which provides personalized ABA intervention plans for children as well as consulting services and workshops to autism treatment teams in the United States and abroad. Tamara's publications include the K&K Sign to Talk materials and Speak with Sign. She is a past recipient of the Wisconsin Speech and Hearing Association’s Clinical Achievement Award.

Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson, MS, CCC-SLP, a graduate of Ithaca College and Columbia University, has more than 35 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist. She has spent the last 25 years developing oral-motor techniques for infants, children, and adults, and has seen a high degree of success in their therapeutic application. For this reason she is now a leading advocate for the use of oral-motor techniques in conjunction with more traditional speech therapies and is devoted to teaching other professionals about oral-motor techniques to promote speech clarity and feeding safety.
Sara is the author of Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) for /s/ and /z/, Oral Placement Therapy for Speech Clarity and Feeding, Oral-Motor Exercises for Speech Clarity, Assessment and Treatment of the Jaw, The HOMEWORK Book, the Drooling Program, and many other educational materials.
In 1995, Sara founded TalkTools® as a speakers bureau and source for oral-motor therapy and therapy tools. She has held seminars throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Italy, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, England, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Cyprus and Singapore. Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a renowned author and clinician specializing in language and brain development. Dr. Burns is an ASHA Fellow, serves on the faculty of Northwestern University in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and has been a consultant to Chicago area school districts for over 30 years.
