SEMINAR DESCRIPTION: Working with non-verbal or unintelligible children can be challenging. Traditional therapy approaches are not always effective. This seminar will introduce participants to four clinically proven interventions to produce functional, vocal behavior in nonverbal or unintelligible children. Discussed in detail will be: the use of music, rhythm and rhyme; coarticulation strategies; oral placement therapy (OPT); and the SMILE approach (Sensory, Motor, Interaction, Language and Experimental Learning). The material presented will isolate specific deficits that need to be identified to determine where to start therapy. Reasons for failure in therapy will be addressed including ineffective motivation techniques, unidentified muscle weakness, failure to integrate the sensory systems and ineffective connected speech techniques. Training techniques for each of theses four areas will be discussed to help participants recognize and successfully treat these obstacles that hinder successful therapy outcomes. (Focus will be children ages 2-10 years.) Cancellation Policy & Late RegistrationRegistration Cancellation Policy: Tuition will be refunded less a $25 processing fee if emailed notification is received by NSS up to two weeks prior to the seminar date.
