  • SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

Working with non-verbal or unintelligible children can be challenging. Traditional therapy approaches are not always effective. This seminar will introduce participants to four clinically proven interventions to produce functional, vocal behavior in nonverbal or unintelligible children. Discussed in detail will be: the use of music, rhythm and rhyme; coarticulation strategies; oral placement therapy (OPT); and the SMILE approach (Sensory, Motor, Interaction, Language and Experimental Learning).

The material presented will isolate specific deficits that need to be identified to determine where to start therapy. Reasons for failure in therapy will be addressed including ineffective motivation techniques, unidentified muscle weakness, failure to integrate the sensory systems and ineffective connected speech techniques. Training techniques for each of theses four areas will be discussed to help participants recognize and successfully treat these obstacles that hinder successful therapy outcomes. (Focus will be children ages 2-10 years.)

Christine L. Harkness, MS, CCC-SLP, is a practicing speech-language pathologist with 30 years of experience with infants, children and adults who present with a wide range of cognitive, communication and swallowing disorders. Christine has developed the multi-sensory based SMILE approach (sensory, motor, interaction, language and experimental learning) to facilitate functional communication and uses each key element in the assessment and treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Disabilities and Sensory Processing Disorders.

Steven Siegelman, MS, CCC-SLP, has been a practicing speech-language pathologist for over 25 years, including 16 years experience in public school systems and 17 years experience in home health (primarily geriatrics). Steven has studied the literature of coarticulation and articulatory phonology for many years which has led to the development of his technique, The Siegelman Method: Coarticulation Therapy. This method can be used to treat children with severe phonological disorders, as well as adults who present with literal paraphasia. His methods have been shown to be effective, efficient, and successful for moving unintelligible clients to functionally intelligible communicators. Steven has presented his methods at the ASHA National Conference, the Alaska State Special Education Conference and at numerous school districts.
