This course reviews and updates clinical research on speech sound disorders, language and reading disorders, and cognitive disorders in children. By briefly looking back at the views of significant contributors to our field, the course provides historical perspective for understanding some of the differences in treatment methodologies advocated by current leaders in speech-language pathology.

With an understanding of diverse viewpoints, each section of the course concludes with a practical summary of the newest evidence-based assessment and intervention approaches. Includes discussion of new ‘hot topics’ for clinicians in school and clinical settings.

Course is offered for 0.3 ASHA CEUs – 3 Contact Hours.

Course Overview – Run Time: 3:15:42

  1. Historical perspective and current research on causes and manifestations of speech sound disorders.
  2. Evidence-based interventions for CAS.
  3. Historical perspective and current research on causes and manifestations of reading disorders.
  4. Application of the multi-deficit approach to intervention with dyslexia.
  5. Historical perspective on developmental cognitive disorders as those changes have affected diagnosis and speech-language intervention.
  6. Polygenetics of autism spectrum disorders and how that new genetic research influences speech and language assessment and treatment.
  7. Current new topics of scientific discussion: technology, students with interrupted formal education, the SLP client-clinician relationship.
"I love all courses by Dr. Martha Burns. When I am communicating with parents, I want to make sure that I am aware of the most recent research. The way Dr. Burns lays out her presentations makes it easy for me to adapt into my stock explanations to parents in my daily practice. I am a huge fan!"
