The Color My Conversation program (CMC) is an engaging, multi-sensory teaching approach to guide children through the conversation flow as well as teach the language skills needed for face-to-face conversations. Children will learn to navigate through a conversation starting at a basic greeting and working toward the most complex conversation that the child is capable of having. The holistic approach fosters the development of social awareness, self-regulation, executive function, and meta-cognitive and meta-linguistic skills. This complete program includes a lot of fun, interactive activities that aid children in starting and maintaining a conversation.

CMC is a very dynamic program, and the instruction incorporates errorless learning in order to keep stress low and outcomes positive. Using the comprehensive manual (downloadable as well as on CD) and online lesson support videos, you can easily and fully understand how to implement this program for student success. Beginner Level – Ages 5-12 years

The first three lessons of the CMC program are presented with a kinesthetic element.

  • "Conversation Path" floor pads that children will physically step on as they walk through the conversation. These pads can be written on with the included dry erasable markers.
  • A ball will be tossed back and forth to represent turn taking as well as to establish eye contact. Ribbon will also be used.
  • Students will learn simple greetings & farewells (including body language/nonverbal communication), short conversations, and long conversations (i.e. topics, comments, questions and topic changers).
  • A Wall Display will start to be built to represent the Conversation Path and should remain up as a visual support for the children.

NOTE: Adaptations are provided for children with intellectual disabilities.

Takes about 5 weeks to complete this level

CMC Conversation Path

Intermediate Level – Ages 5-12 years

Here you begin to "Take It To The Table" while continuing to walk the Conversation Path and develop the Wall Display as children practice the new conversational features being introduced.

  • Students will learn about "WH" questions, Interrogative Reversal questions (i.e. Yes! No! Maybe So!), making comments count, how to become a topic changer pro, and how to speak loud and clear.
  • Worksheets, crafts, artwork, drill work and game activities are provided for each lesson.
  • Children will grow in confidence as they practice their use of the conversational features being presented and have an increased ability to have conversations on a wider array of topics!

NOTE: Lesson arrangements may need to be adapted for children with intellectual disabilities.

Takes about 6-8 weeks to complete.

CMC Take It To The Table  

Advanced Level – 8-12 years

The multi-activity Color My Conversation Game is introduced where children will either actively play or observe and comment on those who are playing it.

  • This lesson focuses on improving a child's ability to initiate, maintain, or close topics using appropriate topic transitions and turn taking strategies using the 2-sided multi-activity CMC Game Board.
  • Students also practice taking the role of the primary listener or the primary speaker.

Takes about 3-5 weeks to complete.

Expert Level – Variable ages

This lesson is intended for all ages, because its purpose is to identify the conversation skills that each child is capable of using and then supporting the transfer of those skills from the practice room to a natural setting.

  • Students practice conversations in the "real world."
  • You can also target conversations that have not been addressed (customized conversations) or require further skill development.
  • Customized conversations can be taught at any point after the Beginner Level.

A special lesson for our special children! Targeting the same goals as the Beginner Level, adaptations are provided to meet the needs of children who have intellectual disabilities. Such as:

  • Conversation Path stones may have no writing and might only show drawings or symbols.
  • Verbal instructions may be limited, and use of exaggerated gestures may be increased.
  • Limited amount of topics but a high level of repetition for each topic.
  • Sentence strips may be used to support grammar and sentence structure.
  • Goals for conversation features will be adjusted and repetitive in nature.

Sign Language & Gestures

The CMC program is multi-sensory. One teaching method that is implemented in the program is the use of signs and gestures. The intent is not to teach children a formal signing system but rather to provide visual supports for key concepts being presented in the lessons. The signs and gestures can be used at your discretion.

Target Audience

For SLPs, educators, special educators and others working with children who struggle with conversation skills. Appropriate populations include: high-functioning autism, Asperger syndrome, LLD, language delayed, ADHD, fluency, articulation, children with mild intellectual disabilities, as well as children within general education. Student ages: K-7th grade.


Rosslyn Delmonico, MA, RSLP, CCC-SLP, has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 35 years both within the private and public school systems and has had her own private practice since 1991. Through her years of experience, she has worked almost exclusively with school-age children, with her main focus of interest being on those with language impairments.

Rosslyn saw a need for a connected and comprehensive social language program, one which would take language-impaired children from a basic greeting to the most complex conversation that they were capable of having. In 2006, she started developing a speech-language therapy tool for children within her caseload called Color My Conversation. Since that time, it has continued to emerge as a social language based program applicable to both special needs and general education children.

Rosslyn discovered that her best teaching practices developed over her years of experience included movement, color, song, and hands-on learning. If the children were having fun, they were engaged. When they were engaged, they were learning! Her multisensory approach to teaching has proven to be highly effective with her students. Rosslyn's personal philosophy is that all children are special, can learn, and have something to give the world through their unique personalities.

"I have a child with Asperger's Syndrome and even though he is a genius, he had no idea how to "act appropriately" with his peers.
