Description

If you're looking for a playful therapy tool with hundreds of opportunities for motor-speech, receptive and expressive language practice, plus early literacy activities, then this is for you!

This uniquely designed, hands-on puzzle has been updated to be more affordable and lightweight (formerly magnetic) making it fit your budget and easier to transport. This interactive and engaging tool helps children who have difficulty combining consonants and vowels to form words. It features the Mutt Family characters and object manipulatives that will strengthen their ability to produce simple syllable shaped words and move into expressive language without taxing the speech motor planning system. The target words included are the earliest and easiest phonemes/syllable shapes that are great for building receptive and expressive language skills. This was created for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) but it can be used with any children who struggle to speak. Plus, you have the flexibility to vary tasks and increase the level of difficulty as the child's language skills improve.

Depending on your students' capabilities, there are many ways to use this therapy tool. View Full Puzzle >

  • Motor-Speech Practice
    • The Mutt Family puppies and friends were named with repetitive syllables with vowel change words (Bobby, Nonny, Poppy, etc), simple bisyllabics (Heidi, Paddy, Mona, Toby, etc), and some with simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words.
    • The featured verbs contain the earliest and easiest phonemes to produce /m,p,b,t,d,n,h/ giving children more opportunities for successful motor-speech coordination.
  • Expressive Language Practice
    • Teach two- and three-word formulations while slowly adding in the expressive language elements of syntax and morphology.
    • Increase the level of complexity as the child's language skills improve by starting with a single scene piece and moving up to the full 18-piece puzzle. Include the object pieces for even more complexity.
    • Work through 12 levels of continuous practice by:
      • Level 1 – Labeling the Mutt Family puppies.
      • Level 2 – Labeling the Mutt Family puppies with the verb in a phrase.
      • Level 3 – Labeling the Mutt Family puppies in a noun-verb-object format.
      • Level 4 – Labeling the actions in a present progressive format.
      • Level 5 – Labeling the actions with a thrid-pwerson singular verb.
      • Level 6 – Labeling the actions with the past-tense auxiliary verb.
      • Level 7 – Labeling the actions adding the article plus object.
      • Level 8 – Labeling the actions using a pronoun in place of the Mutt name.
      • Level 9 – Labeling the actions adding a possessive pronoun.
      • Level 10 – Labeling the actions using pronouns and possessive pronoun agreement.
      • Level 11 – Telling a story.
      • Level 12 – Telling a story adding pronouns, possessive pronouns and the object.
  • Receptive Language Practice
    • Work on auditory recognition, processing, comprehension, retention, and integration skills with the Mutt Family puppies, object pieces, and puzzle scenes.

The K-SLP has evolved over the years to include the most current research in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), motor learning, and applied behavior analysis (ABA), and its methods and materials are used by speech-language pathologists worldwide. In addition, many ABA specialists have adopted the K-SLP for children with autism spectrum disorders.

Nancy lectures locally, nationally, and internationally on the subject of CAS and other speech sound disorders in children. Families from around the country and the world travel to the Kaufman Children's Center for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor, and Social Connections, Inc (KCC) in West Bloomfield, Michigan to participate in intensive, specialized therapy programs. The KCC continues to grow, offering renowned speech, language, occupational therapy, sensory integration, and applied behavior analysis (ABA) center and home-based autism programs.

Nancy serves on the Professional Advisory Council for the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA), on the board of visitors of Wayne State University's Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development, and is the speech-language pathologist consultant for the Parish School and Carruth Center in Houston, Texas, and Suburban Speech Center in Short Hills, New Jersey.
