Cognitive impairment directly impacts all functional activities, from speaking to dressing to walking. Relearning these activities can be challenging for both geriatric and cognitively impaired patients. For successful outcomes, these patients need an individualized approach that addresses their specific cognitive abilities. This course was developed to help rehabilitation professionals individualize their approach for each patient, with focused consideration on the patient's abilities and barriers. The approaches presented will be supported by research and will focus on improving functional independence in communication, mobility, and ADLs. Offered for 0.45 ASHA CEUs – 4.5 contact hours.

Course Objectives

  1. Differentiate types of memory and how these types change as people age or develop dementia.
  2. Know why memory failures occur.
  3. Describe the types of cognitive abilities that remain relatively intact during older adulthood and through most stages of dementia.
  4. Help people with memory impairment process information at a deeper level in order to encode new memories.
  5. Describe what lobes of the brain handle basic cognitive functions (e.g., attention, language, vision, and planning).
  6. Describe different behaviors and interventions that can improve executive functioning (e.g., attention, inhibition, and planning).
  7. Deliver word fluency and word generation activities.
  8. Deliver a wide range of executive functioning activities.
  9. Describe many different types of cognitively stimulating activities.
  10. Describe how exercise affects cognition and what types of exercise affect which cognitive abilities.
  11. Ready-to-implement, effective strategies that enhance functional independence in clients with cognitive impairment. (Identify strategies to remove common barriers to learning.)

Presenter & Disclosures

Mike Studer, PT, MHS, NCS, received his physical therapy degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1991. He received his post-professional MHS degree in physical therapy with neurologic emphasis from the University of Indianapolis. He has been board-certified as a Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy since 1995 and has been designated a Certified Exercise Expert in the Aging Adult (CEEAA) by the Academy of Geriatric PT since 2011. Mike has served as the Vice-president of the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy of the APTA and has been the chair and vice-chair of several special interest groups at the national level in each of the Academies of Neurologic and Geriatric PT, including Balance and Falls, Stroke, and the Practice Committee in neurology. He is a full-time treating therapist at and founder of Northwest Rehabilitation Associates, in Oregon. Mr. Studer has presented courses and published articles on neurologic and geriatric rehabilitation since 1995 and has authored and co-authored over 25 articles on topics of neurology and geriatrics, as well as several book chapters on stroke, PD, and preventative care as well. Mike is now regularly a guest lecturer on a national and international basis at several universities and national meetings on the topics of balance, motor control, motor learning, cognitive impairment and case management. He was awarded the 2011 Clinician of the Year by the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy – a section of the American Physical Therapy Association – and in 2014 the same award by the Academy of Geriatric PT the first to receive this national distinction from each entity.

What is an Online Course? Our Online Courses include text, audio, or video formats and are offered for ASHA CEUs. Unlike a webinar, which requires participants to be logged on and at a computer at specific times, our Online Courses are available to you at any time, from any computer, via your Northern Speech account. You may work at your own pace and start and stop your course as you wish. Your course will conclude with a short post test. On successful completion of the post test (>80%) a printable certificate of completion is presented to you.

Receiving CEUs: Northern Speech is an ASHA CE Provider and our online courses are registered with ASHA and offered for CEUs. Please note that successful completion of the online post test is required prior to the awarding of CEUs. Please contact your state licensing board for acceptance policies related to online CEUs.

Testing requirements: Each online course concludes with a post test consisting of multiple choice or true & false questions. Scores of 80% or greater are required for successful course completion and awarding of CEUs. You may revisit course materials and retest as needed to achieve a passing score.

Certificate of completion: A certificate displaying participant name, date of course completion (based on the Eastern Standard Time Zone), and the number of contact hours earned is presented to participants once a score of 80% or greater is earned on the post test. Please note that CEUs are awarded on the date of successful test completion, not the date of course enrollment. Please ensure that you successfully complete the post test prior to any licensure renewal dates.
