Kaufman Kit 1
teaches children to combine consonants and vowels to form words while controlling for oral-motor difficulty. The 225 visual referent cards were selected specifically to target and teach the syllable shapes children need to master to become effective vocal/verbal communicators. Treatment methods employ a systematic and progressive approach of simplifying word pronunciation patterns to shape and expand verbal expression and make communication easier for children with childhood apraxia of speech and other speech sound disorders.

This highly effective approach builds intelligibility through a hierarchy of successive "word shell" approximations based on least physiological effort of target words. The clinician also is able to introduce more complex phoneme patterns as the child's ability improves, thus maintaining the child's ability to speak at his or her maximum level.

Included 52-page manual explains the Kaufman approach and how these methods can help children progress quickly from a simple core vocabulary toward becoming effective, functional, intelligible communicators. Ages 2 to 8. Made in the USA.

  • Targets synthesis of sounds: /b, d, h, m, n, p, t, w/
  • Trains children to combine consonants and vowels to form words.
  • Teaches the pivot syllable shapes children need to master to become effective vocal/verbal communicators.
  • Explains the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) methods in the included manual.
  • Includes 225 visual referent cards (5" x 7").
  • See Kaufman Kit 2 for sequencing words with /k, g, f, s, sh/ & blends /s, r, l/.

Kaufman Kit 1 Cards - USE

Controls for oral-motor difficulty.
Each card breaks down the target word into a series of successive word approximations based on the least physiological effort. These "word shells" provide a verbal avenue by which children communicate at their own skill level with success!

Nancy Kaufman,

Nancy R. Kaufman is the owner and Director of the Kaufman Children's Center for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor, and Social Connections, Inc. located in West Bloomfield, MI. Over the past 30 years Nancy has developed and perfected highly effective and evidence-based methods and strategies to evaluate and treat children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Nancy's current protocol to address CAS, The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP), has been evolving since 1979.

The K-SLP is rooted in teaching strategies of applied behavioral analysis and the principles of motor learning. Some of the strategies include shaping successive word approximations toward target syllables and words, teaching compensatory placements for vowels and consonants of which the child is not stimulable, implementing pivot syllables, words and phrases, as well as multisensory cueing and scripting towards functional and effective expressive language. Nancy has trained over 35,000 SLPs to implement her protocol and families from around the world bring children with CAS to her clinic to receive intensive therapy.

Nancy was the recipient of The 2010 Michigan State University College of Communication Arts & Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award, The 2011 Michigan-Speech-Language-Hearing Association Distinguished Service Award, and the 2015 Wayne State University Distinguished Alumni Award. Nancy also serves on the Professional Advisory Board of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America. She is also the author of several highly effective treatment materials that address CAS and other sound disorders. In addition, many specialists in the field of applied verbal behavior have adopted the K-SLP for children with autism spectrum disorder. Nancy received her Bachelor's degree at Michigan State University and her Master's degree at Wayne State University.

—Tori (Jake's Journey with Apraxia) 1/21/2015

"I love Kit 1 - and have used it several times over the years with toddlers and preschoolers. I find it gives them so much success and confidence - and the parents just love it! It really 'unlocks' something that leads to a growth in vocabulary and communication skills!"
Speech-Language Pathologist

"My son is still on Kit 1, but he has made HUGE gains with the K-SLP methods. We purchased Kit 1 and Kit 2 for home use. He has gone from 35% accuracy to 100% on VCV (vowel-consonant-vowel) in a very short time!"

"I work with children with Autism and they enjoy working with Kit 1. I have seen huge improvements in overall communication and intelligibility...just seeing their ability to communicate more effectively has been wonderful!"
Speech-Language Pathologist

"My son is still using Kit 1 with his SLP, and we also have a set at home to practice with. It has been such a great tool for him! He started therapy off at 2 & 1/2 years old and was essentially nonverbal. Now, he's three and has been making slow, but steady progress! He loves the cards!"

"I have Kits 1 & 2 along with the Workout Book. I had a little guy who was starting with Kit 1 in August and we are into Kit 2 now. He loves the cards and the "puppy book", especially Moppy! He loves making up his own phrases with the cards. One of his sisters saw me at the store and she came up and hugged me and said 'Thank you for teaching my brother to talk! We can understand him now!'"
Speech-Language Pathologist

"I work in the schools and my biggest success was the parents giving me the best compliments as they couldn't believe the success received with increased intelligibility...using these Kits! I can't thank you enough!"
