This course teaches clinicians effective and practical strategies to manage challenging and defiant behavior in their young clients. Children with difficult temperaments and those with developmental delays may have learned to express their dissatisfaction with challenging and defiant behavior like whining, anger, temper tantrums or bad language. They sometimes engage in negative behavior or “misbehave” because they do not have the necessary skills – communicative or otherwise – to make their needs known.

This course will also focus on how clinicians can educate parents on how to manage difficult behavior and avoid power struggles at home. The dynamics and techniques described in this course are intended for use with typically functioning children and those with developmental or language delays. They are not generally adequate or even appropriate for children with serious behavior conditions like oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorders.

Course is offered for 0.35 ASHA CEUs – 3.5 Contact Hours.

Course Overview – Run Time: 3:30:20

  • Identification and forms of defiance.
  • Reasons for defiant behavior.
  • Triggers of defiant behavior.
  • Therapeutic interventions to prevent defiant behavior.
  • Counseling parents of defiant children.
  • Setting up a home to avoid power struggles.
  • Responding appropriately to defiance in verbal children to avoid power struggles.
"How to use positive self-talk in the moment will be beneficial for my practice. This course really addressed the same type of issues I encounter on a daily basis for a handful of students."

– S.L., prior course participant

"I learned how to respond to the code language that children use." T.N. (Aug. 2021)

"The most beneficial information was the multitude of phrases and ways of interacting with students to diffuse their anger and need to be confrontational. These will be useful on a daily basis. I also thought it was important to realize that these students get caught in a defiant pattern and its easy for them to get stuck in this cycle and not find their way out of it. It was easy to follow along with and interesting to listen to. The videos were a nice addition. I feel that the suggestions will be useful for a wide range of students, from those who are mildly uncooperative to those who are persistently defiant." A.K. (Aug. 2021)

“I loved the sections about teaching clients to problem-solve and active listening. These ideas can be easily incorporated into my daily practice.
