Video Preview of the MBSImP™ Training Program
The MBSImP™ Training Zone with Scoring Feedback
The MBSImP™ approach provides a standardized and evidence-based protocol to interpret and communicate MBS study results in a manner that is specific, consistent, accurate and objective.
This self-study, online course includes the MBSImP™ Standardized Clinical Training and Reliability Testing. Participants will learn to employ a standardized assessment of swallowing impairment through examination of 17 physiologic components of the swallowing mechanism in adults.
The training platform includes videofluoroscopic images paired with custom-built animations to depict swallowing impairments. Participants will be taught systematically the 17 physiologic components and standardized impairment scores associated with each that together comprise the MBSImP standardized assessment. The training format provides ample opportunity for interactive practice in interpreting swallow studies. Feedback is given to aid in refining scoring accuracy. When ready, participants will demonstrate their competency in the reliability zone testing.
Participants may work at their own pace, may stop and start the training at any point, and have unlimited time to complete this training. The reliability testing may be repeated as needed. This training is fully website-based and requires no special software. Course focus is the adult population.
Offered for 2.1 ASHA CEUs – 21 contact hours.
This training program is conducted fully online and contains audio, video and interactive practice components. Participants may work at their own pace and have unlimited time to finish. Clinical email support is available for training course questions. Specifically, this training is divided into three Zones:
LEARNING ZONE: Participants are taught 17 physiologic components of the swallowing mechanism and their associated impairment scores which together comprise the MBSImP assessment. Component scores are taught via narrated PowerPoint presentations and also visually demonstrated via fluoroscopy segments paired with state-of-the-art swallow animations.
TRAINING ZONE: Participants practice scoring each MBSImP component, initially on single, isolated swallows taken from swallow studies, and then practice scoring each component on full MBS studies. Immediate feedback is provided and this zone may be repeated as needed to refine scoring accuracy.
RELIABILITY ZONE: This is the testing zone. Participants are tested on their newly acquired skill in using the MBSImP scoring metric to successfully capture and profile swallowing impairment in adults. Ten high-resolution swallow studies are presented for scoring. Accuracy of 80% or higher must be achieved on each of the 17 components. Partial retests are required only on those components scored with less than 80% accuracy.
PATIENT DATA & REPORTS: Once the Reliability Zone has been successfully completed, access is granted to the very functional "Patient Data & Reports" clinical area of www.mbsimp.com. This area provides free online templates for clinicians to generate standardized assessment reports based on MBSImP impairment scores.
RENEWAL COURSE: Registered MBSImP Clinician status is awarded for a period of 5 years. The 5-year renewal process will consist of a $99 renewal fee and completion of a 5-hour online training course related to the MBSImP.
This online CE course focuses on the MBSImP™ Approach for assessment of swallowing impairment. Other assessment protocols will not be included in this course. View financial and non-financial disclosures in the Presenter & Disclosures area.
Learners who complete this training and pass the online Reliability Testing will earn the designation of Registered MBSImP Clinician. A current roster of Registered MBSImP Clinicians may be viewed here.
Registered MBSImP Clinicians have access to the MBSImP Patient Data & Reports area where standardized assessment reports may be generated and saved.

Post Test and Certificate of Completion:
Accuracy of 80% or higher must be achieved on each of the 17 components across the 10 swallow studies in the Reliability Zone testing in order to receive a certificate of completion and earn Registered MBSImP Clinician status. Retesting will be required only on those components scored with less than 80% accuracy.
CEUs cannot be awarded partially nor proactively.

ASHA CEUs: NSS online courses are registered with ASHA and are offered for ASHA CEUs. The number of ASHA CEUs is noted above. Note that 0.1 ASHA CEU = 1 contact hour = equals 1 CEE.
ASHA CE Registry: During the enrollment process, if you select to receive ASHA credit for this course and if you provide your ASHA number, NSS will automatically submit your CEU information to the ASHA CE Registry after successful course completion (80% on post test). This submission happens once per month, during the first week of the month. For example, if you complete your course on November 7th, NSS will submit all November online course CEUs to ASHA during the first week of December. When ASHA inputs the information into their database, they will mark the course as completed on the last day of the month in which it was completed, so November 30th using this example. The certificate of completion available for you to print immediately, however, will reflect the actual completion date, November 7th in this example. Due to ASHA processing procedures please allow 2-3 weeks, from the submission date, for the course to appear on your ASHA transcript.
ASHA CEUs: Attendees must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs:
If an attendee is not an ASHA member or CCC holder but meets any of the above criteria, they may inform the ASHA CE Registry of their eligibility by visiting this site.
Licensing Boards: Most state licensing boards DO accept CEUs earned online (usually classified as home-study credits). Some state boards do, however, place a limit to the number of credits that can be earned via home study/online courses. For the most current information, we suggest that you contact your licensing board or agency to verify acceptance policies and/or any credit limits related to home-study courses prior to registering for this course.
