Kaufman Speech Praxis Test (KSPT)

Aids in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech.

The Kaufman Speech Praxis Test (KSPT) is a norm-referenced, diagnostic test assisting in the identification and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech. Easy to administer and score, KSPT measures a child's imitative responses to the clinician, identifies where the speech system is breaking down, and points to a systematic course of treatment. Breakdowns in KSPT match the levels of treatment in the K-SLP Treatment Kits, allowing for a seamless transition to therapy. Ages: 2;0 – 5;11. Admin time: 5-15 minutes.

The KSPT is useful beyond establishing an initial diagnosis, as results can be used to measure and quantify gains in motor-speech proficiency. Also, test sections can assist in developing goals for IEPs and measuring progress. Order includes complete KSPT with a packet of 25 score sheets. Additional score sheets may be ordered here.

  • Identifies where the child's speech system is breaking down and points to a specific course of treatment.
  • Norm-referenced and standardized items that provide a raw score, standard score, and a percentile ranking.
  • Provides normative information for the "normal" pediatric speaking population and the "disordered" population.
  • Results assist in planning treatment, developing goals for IEPs, and measuring progress.
  • Breakdowns in KSPT match the levels of treatment in the K-SLP Treatment Kits, allowing for a seamless transition to therapy.
  • In-Depth Training Available >

The author recommends using this test as a clinical tool to determine where a child's speech is breaking down and for selecting target souns and words to implement the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP). At this time, there are no plans to update the test normative data as the clinical application of the test remains current and appropriate.

Target Audience

For speech-language pathologists in schools, hospitals, universities, clinics, and private practice, the KSPT will aid in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech in children ages 2;0 – 5;11.

Since 1979, Nancy Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP, has dedicated herself to establishing the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP), a treatment approach to help children become effective vocal communicators. The K-SLP has evolved over the years to include the most current research in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), motor learning, and applied behavior analysis (ABA), and its methods and materials are used by speech-language pathologists worldwide. In addition, many ABA specialists have adopted the K-SLP for children with autism spectrum disorders.

Nancy lectures locally, nationally, and internationally on the subject of CAS and other speech sound disorders in children. Families from around the country and the world travel to the Kaufman Children's Center for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor, and Autism Treatment, Inc (KCC) in West Bloomfield, Michigan to participate in intensive, specialized therapy programs. The KCC continues to grow, offering renowned speech, language, occupational therapy, sensory integration, and applied behavior analysis (ABA) center and home-based autism programs.

Nancy served as a member of the Professional Advisory Council for Apraxia Kids for 10 years. Currently, she serves on the board of visitors of Wayne State University's Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development and is the speech-language pathologist consultant for the Parish School and Carruth Center in Houston, Texas, and Suburban Speech Center in Short Hills, New Jersey.

Nancy has been honored by both of her alma maters: she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Wayne State University in 2015 and the Outstanding Alumni Award from Michigan State University in 2010. She was awarded the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA) Distinguished Service Award in 2011 and the West Bloomfield Township Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Business Person of the Year Award in 2015. She was also recognized by the Lawrence Technological University Leaders & Innovators program. The KCC has received MSHA's Clinical Service Award and Corp! Magazine's Best of Michigan Business Award. Customer Reviews

"That’s a thorough test! There aren’t a ton of CAS assessments out there, but I really like this one. It doesn’t take very long to administer and gives some great information. Plus you can use it to track progress." Click here to read The Speech Girls entire blog review. – The Speech Girls (Feb. 2018)

"I really like the Kaufman Test as it gives you a good starting point in therapy (where their speech breaks down)." – SLP (Dec. 2017)

"I use the Kaufman Test on a regular basis to qualify those children who are receptively at or above age range but are minimally verbal ages 2 and older. LOVE it." – SLP (Dec. 2017)

"I recommend the Kaufman Test. Very detailed. Provides good info. It is time-consuming." – SLP (Dec. 2017)

"I like the Kaufman Test. It's not hard to give or score." – SLP (Oct. 2017)

"We love the KSPT!" – SLP (June 2017)

"I used mine yesterday and it's the best tool for analyzing speech production in a hierarchy of sounds, starting with the easiest and progressing through the complex. It breaks it down and really gives you good data for not only diagnosis and appraisal, but for planning intervention." – SLP (Mar. 2016)

"The Kaufman Test has worked great for me." – SLP (Feb. 2016)

"I recommend the KSPT- It starts with vowels. So even in those limited contexts, it's helpful and thorough. It also has the nonspeech imitation tasks. It's all imitative (in the simple to complex phoneme parts) but it will cover all your contexts and sounds, imo. The scoring is a pain, to me, but I use it for progress and target planning, even for kiddos who aren't exactly exhibiting CAS. It is a lifesaver for those who really do, however." – SLP (Feb. 2016)

"Kaufman breaks down the test beautifully with assessment in multiple areas of motor speech function." – SLP (Feb. 2016)

"I love the test and use it for progress measures for not only my apraxic students but others as well. So many contexts to hear!" – SLP (Feb. 2016)

"The levels of breakdown match the levels of treatment in the Kaufman Treatment Kits, allowing for a seamless transition to therapy." – SLP (2014)
