This self-study, online CEU course includes the MBSImP™ standardized clinical training and reliability testing. The MBSImP approach provides a validated and evidence-based protocol to interpret and communicate MBS study results in a manner that is specific, consistent, accurate and objective.
Participants will learn to employ a standardized assessment of swallowing impairment through examination of 17 essential physiologic components of the adult swallowing mechanism. Utilizing videofluoroscopic images paired with custom-built animations depicting swallow impairments, participants are systematically taught the 17 physiologic components and standardized impairment scores associated with each that together comprise the MBSImP standardized assessment.
The training format includes ample opportunity for interactive practice in interpreting swallow studies and provides feedback as to accuracy of impairment scoring. When ready, participants will demonstrate their competency in the reliability zone testing. Participants may work at their own pace and have unlimited time to complete this training. The reliability testing may be repeated as needed. This training is fully website-based and requires no special software. Offered for 2.1 ASHA CEUs – 21 contact hours. Download MBSImP Advocacy Guide
**Groups of 3 or more must submit all enrollment forms together to receive the group discount.
**Purchase orders are accepted, however, they do not constitute payment. Access to the training will only be granted after payment is received in the form of check or credit card.
This online CE course focuses on the MBSImP approach for assessment of swallowing impairment. Other assessment protocols will not be included in this course. View financial and non-financial disclosures in the Presenter & Disclosures area.
This online, website-based training contains audio, video and interactive practice components. Participants may work at their own pace and have unlimited time to finish. Specifically, this training is divided into Zones:
LEARNING ZONE: Participants are taught 17 physiologic components of the swallowing mechanism and their associated impairment scores which together comprise the MBSImP assessment. Component scores are taught via narrated PowerPoint presentations and also visually demonstrated via fluoroscopy segments paired with state-of-the-art swallow animations. tour learning zone
TRAINING ZONE: Participants practice scoring each MBSImP component, initially on single, isolated swallows taken from swallow studies, and then practice scoring each component on full MBS studies. Immediate feedback is provided and this zone may be repeated as needed to refine scoring accuracy. tour training zone
RELIABILITY ZONE: This is the testing zone. Participants are tested on their newly acquired skill in using the MBSImP scoring metric to successfully capture and profile swallowing impairment in adults. Ten high-resolution swallow studies are presented for scoring. Accuracy of 80% or higher must be achieved on each of the 17 components. Partial retests are required only on those components scored with less than 80% accuracy. tour reliability zone
PATIENT DATA & REPORTS: Once the Reliability Zone has been successfully completed, access is granted to the very functional "Patient Data & Reports" clinical area of www.mbsimp.com. This area provides free online templates for clinicians to generate standardized assessment reports based on MBSImP impairment scores. tour of express reports | tour of full report templates
RENEWAL COURSE: Registered MBSImP Clinician status is awarded for a period of 5 years. The 5-year renewal process will consist of a $99 renewal fee and completion of a 5-hour CEU training & testing related to the MBSImP.
Learners who complete this training and pass the online Reliability Assessment testing will earn the designation of Registered MBSImP Clinician. A current list of Registered MBSImP Clinicians may be viewed here. Registered MBSImP Clinicians have access to the MBSImP Patient Data & Reports area where standardized assessment reports may be generated and saved. Registered MBSImP Clinician status is awarded for a period of 5 years. The 5-year renewal process will consist of a $99 renewal fee and completion of a 5-hour CEU training & testing related to the MBSImP.
The MBSImP is much more than simply a CE training program! Completion of the MBSImP standardized clinical training and reliability testing is just the beginning of all that the MBSImP approach was intended to be.
The clinical training portion of www.mbsimp.com introduced a standardized approach for objectively profiling swallow impairment. The Patient Data & Reports area of www.mbsimp.com then allows for Registered MBSImP Clinicians to communicate those results via standardized assessment reports. Access to these online report generating templates is granted at no additional cost to those who successfully pass the Reliability Zone testing. Registered MBSImP Clinicians can use these clinical tools to:
Post Test and Certificate of Completion: Accuracy of 80% or higher must be achieved on each of the 17 components across the 10 swallow studies in the Reliability Zone testing in order to receive a certificate of completion and earn Registered MBSImP Clinician status. Retesting will be required only on those components scored with less than 80% accuracy.
CEUs cannot be awarded partially nor proactively.

“This is a comprehensive course which will help you improve your skills as a clinician interpreting modified barium swallow studies. It is the ONLY real comprehensive course out there. I recommend it for all clinicians performing MBSS's. Standardization in our field is KEY!!”
“This is a very thorough program with an abundance of resources to help clinicians analyze video swallows with precision and reliability. I appreciate the combination of real videos with anatomical animations to guide learning.”
“I liked the fact that there was no way to cheat the system in the final exam. You were not given answers as to what you got wrong, and studies were shuffled and replaced. You truly need to learn and understand these concepts to successfully complete the course. That being said, I also appreciated having an unlimited amount of times to take the test so that I could then learn, test, re-learn, test.”
"I really appreciated how thorough you all were when I emailed you all for help. Every time I reached out, I improved. I like that there are so many training videos to gain adequate practice prior to entering reliability portion of the test."
"I have done many VF of swallow. This was very good at sharpening my eye for some aspects of the study. The learning sections were very good. The use of graphics and examples was awesome. I found the website easy to navigate."
"I love the technical aspects. I can be so specific now in my reports as to areas of impairment and physiological bases for those deficits."
"I am an experienced UK clinician, working routinely with videofluoroscopy for a number of years. Working through your course has very tangibly advanced my clinical practice, my thinking and my analytical eye for reading radiographic images. The package you've put together for clinicians is so robust and supportive, I will be highly recommending it for progressing our clinical skill and standardization in this field."
"It was very challenging! But the rigor leaves me feeling prepared to practice confidently with patients."
"It really helped develop an eye for the 17 components and gave me valuable practice. The course was difficult but I feel I will be a much more effective diagnostician at evaluating video swallow studies and recommending appropriate diets and remedial plans for patients. I feel the course was well researched and presented in a logical format."
"Modifieds are so often seen as tests to simply confirm/deny presence of aspiration and reports are so lacking, which negatively impacts thorough development of a plan of care for patients at the next level of care. I pride myself on writing thorough reports in acute care because I used to work in a SNF and on the rare occasion I could get an MBSS done, I experienced deep frustration with incomplete or vague reports. That being said, I was challenged and feel my reports will be more thorough and I learned a tremendous amount about each physiologic component."
"Fantastic variety of MBS films to watch, and learn from. Some really excellent ideas about swallow physiology that I was not familiar with (and I have done more than 8,000 MBS at the time I took the course)."
"This is one of the most challenging courses I have taken; however, it will also contribute to my clinical practice in the most relevant way. I now feel competent in administering and scoring MBS in a way that is standardized and reflects a true knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the swallowing mechanism."
"After the course last weekend I came in Monday morning and had one of the hardest MBS studies I have ever had. Needless to say the study was a tricky one but I felt so much more confident in my assessment. I used the protocol, implemented strategies, and completed what I believe was a comprehensive and insightful study. Therapy will ensue and the patient can be helped. Thanks to MBSImP what could have been an overwhelming task was manageable. I can't thank you all enough."
"While it is hard to teach an “old dog new tricks”, I really enjoyed learning how to interpret the MBS using the impairment profile. The MBSImP challenged me to think about the interpretation of the MBS in a different fashion and I really enjoyed this challenge. I am so glad that as a hospital system we are going to make this the “standard” for how we do MBS evaluations."
"I really appreciated all the resources available to help with the training and the excellent customer services when emailing specific questions!"
"I learned about my own strengths and weaknesses as a clinician as well as the "standardized" interpretations of physiology."
"Definitely learned about components I never previously knew about or paid much attention to – pharyngeal stripping wave being one of them."
"I liked the videos, the training exercises that immediately told you whether you were right or wrong, and the ability to return to the training for further viewing."
"Teaching the MBSImP can be quite challenging and time consuming. NSS has developed and used an ideal platform to teach and train SLPs about the various components of the MBSImP."
"The animations and explanations were great! Loved that there was an animation and a fluoroscopy to go along with every score for every component – very helpful."
"Very practical training. Many video tutorials to supplement VFSS videos. Multiple trials of each of the components in the training zone. Varied patient profiles in the VFSS videos."
"I learned about all the component parts involved in swallowing and how they interact but also how we need to look at the impairment in each component to help our management of patients. We need to look beyond penetration aspiration to make effective patient rehab goals."
"Breaking apart the study was a huge learning experience."
"I found it to be exceptional. . . It's objective and allows for better communication between trained therapists. Can't recommend it enough."
"I really enjoyed the course and am recommending it to all my colleagues. It was positively challenging. I feel so much more confident when evaluating our VFSS results now and it truly does save time in the long run."
"The characteristics for each component are well defined, the videos provide excellent examples of the components. The attention to detail is outstanding. The learning is enhanced by the availability of the replay of the videos for study."
"I am so excited to have this standardization protocol in place. I have been frustrated for a long time with the differences in interpretation of MBSs from one clinician to another. I think this will add credibility to our profession. I am excited to start using the reports and contribute to research!"
