Caring for individuals living with dementia can pose challenges for everyone concerned. The confusion and memory loss that are the hallmarks of dementia often lead to frustration and chaos in relationships and in the caregiving environment – and lead to stressed-out, overworked, exhausted care partners. There is a better way.

Each segment of this course is carefully designed to provide participants with simple, actionable solutions that can be implemented today with individuals with dementia and their care partners. The Montessori philosophy discussed gives rehabilitation therapists the tools they need to dramatically improve their experience of working with clients with dementia in the home and long-term care setting.

Course is offered for 0.85 ASHA CEUs – 8.5 Contact Hours.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify the real reason why elders become depressed, exit seek, and walk about — and learn the exact steps you can take to prevent these behaviors from happening (instead of simply trying to “manage” them).
  2. Integrate a sense of community between staff and long-term care residents.
  3. Formulate an engaging rehabilitation program (appropriate for people at a variety of cognitive levels) in a way that transforms the culture of a long-term care center and ultimately frees up staff time dramatically.
  4. Apply techniques to reduce or eliminate the repetitive questioning behaviors that so often characterize those living with cognitive impairment.
  5. Apply a simple tool for helping people with cognitive impairment participate in meaningful conversations, leading to an improved situation for both the care partner and the person with dementia.
  6. Identify the mistakes almost everyone unknowingly makes in wayfinding and signage, leading to confusion and discord — and find out how to correct them.
  7. Demonstrate how to effectively communicate with people with dementia, so they easily understand what you are trying to convey.
  8. Describe how to help people with dementia learn new or previously known information.
