Description

Improve articulation, expressive and receptive language skills, verbal communication, social pragmatic skills, proper sequencing, and so much more!

Spark Cards - Set 2 includes 8 story sets with 6 cards in each set which are designed specifically to encourage children to observe picture details and to improve their picture interpretation skills. The cards can be used to enhance the ability of children to retell stories, sequence pictures, problem-solve, as well as prompts for 'wh' basic questions. Each picture scene is illustrated specifically to target higher levels of thinking and to improve proficiency in problem-solving, responding to 'why' and 'how' questions, analyzing and comparing, inferring and predicting, and reasoning skills. Each box contains an answer key with a question guide for each picture. Durable, high-quality, colorful 4.5" x 4.5" picture cards. Ages 4 and up.

How It Works:

Individual picture cards can be used on their own or as a complete picture scene set to target many language goals including sentence formulation, use of nouns, verbs and verb tenses, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, temporal concepts, main idea, exposure to basic concepts, and more. Below are a few different ways Spark Cards can be used, and you can create your own ideas as well!

Articulation:

  • Circle objects with target sounds in the picture scenes. Practice the words or phrases. Have the child tell a story about the scenes.

Expressive Language:

  • Increasing Vocabulary: Label basic vocabulary words and objects in pictures. Describe, categorize and expound on the concepts.
  • Sentence Structure: Have the child formulate a sentence for each picture card. Give the child a word to use to formulate sentences. Work on increasing MLU by increasing the length and complexity of the sentences.
  • Telling Narratives: Teach a child how to tell a story. Focus on story elements such as character, setting, plot, climax, and conflict. Have the child formulate sentences, use conjunctions and transitional words to tell the story in sequential order.
  • Main Idea: Have the child identify a title for a set of story cards and/or tell a main idea for each picture illustration.
  • Use of Pronouns: Circle the characters in the picture cards. Have the child practice using pronouns correctly when formulating sentences about the characters.
  • Verb Usage: Line up several cards and work on past, present, and future tense verbs. Work on verbs, plurals, and irregular plurals while describing the picture cards and formulating sentences about them.

    Receptive Language:

    • Sequence It: Have the child set the cards up in the correct order using inferencing skills to infer the correct order of the cards.
    • Answering ‘wh’ Questions: Using the prompt cards, ask ‘wh’ questions such as 'who,' 'what,' 'when,' 'where,' 'why,' and 'how.'

    Social Skills:

    • Emotions: Use a marker to make thinking bubbles and/or speech bubbles to illustrate what the characters might be thinking, saying and feeling.
    • Problem Solving: Work on cause and effect and possible solutions to solve the problems depicted in the pictures.

Adaptable for all ages! Spark Cards are a perfect speech therapy game for classroom and center based activities, individual therapy sessions, at home with parents and entire family. Skill level of cards is adaptable to many levels by simply trimming or using all the cards in a set. To achieve higher level skills and critical thinking, use all 6 picture cards as a set. The sets can also be trimmed to 3-4 picture scenes by removing 2-3 picture cards for lower level sequencing and story retelling. The complexity of the questions can also be adjusted according to the age and skill level of the child.

"I’m a pediatric speech pathologist and I love this sequencing set! We use it to sequence events in a story (of course!) but also to expand sentences through detailed descriptions, produce grammatically and syntactically appropriate sentences from simple to complex, make inferences, and develop problem solving skills." – Jennifer S.

"As a speech therapist of school age children, these cards come in very handy for so many language goals. These cards can be used to help teach narratives, sequencing skills, drawing inferences, and building sentences. The cards are beautifully made and durable. Each story comes with a card with questions and problem solving scenarios for the students to answer." – SLP

"I bought these cards to use with my daughter (7) who is having expressive language difficulties. I needed something a bit more than regular sequencing cards to stimulate her. These cards are more like sequencing scenes and sequencing stories with loads of detail that really help my daughter with her expressive challenge. She is loving them! The card sets come with amazing question cards on each picture which really guide me to work on her language skills. We will save the problem solving tasks (that the sets include) to practice when she targets that in therapy. Overall, really great product." – Nate

"I am a speech-language pathologist in a middle school setting, and sometimes it can be difficult to find age-appropriate materials. I love these cards because each story is relevant and relatable, and the illustrations are age-appropriate. I used my Spark cards to target a variety of goals - grammar and syntax, inferencing, social skills, comprehension at all levels, narrative formulation, picture description, and sequencing. I have even used them for my articulation and fluency students - they were great for mixed groups. The cards were also a lifesaver when my schedule was chaotic, because this no-prep material made lesson planning easy." – Monica

"Wow, what a wonderful teaching tool! These sequencing cards are detailed, versatile, clear, incorporates literacy and oh so durable. The picture stories can be used for younger students as well as older kids (grades 1 & 2). I am excited to use them for the new school year with my language delayed students. I test drove them with my son and he couldn’t get enough! And the teaching prompt cards help a lot!! 100% recommended!"

"I bought these cards to use with my students ages 5-8. Firstly, these cards are super durable and the illustrations of the picture scenes are large and clear. Second, I love that these cards are so versatile and filled with content for learning and generating schema. My students are enjoying putting these scenes in order and I am really loving the handy question prompts provided for each scene."

    Author

After earning her Masters degree as a Speech and Language Pathologist, Spark Innovations founder, Leah Schwed, MA, CCC-SLP, began working with school age children struggling with a variety of language deficits. Among her obligations was creating fun yet educational learning experiences. She noted one common issue again and again, the need for engaging and updated quality materials that encourage children to think and improve language one step at a time. After a decade of experience working with children, she set out to create products and materials that were updated, kid friendly, fun, and multi-functional when used in therapy.

In 2017 Leah incorporated The Spark Innovations Inc., and the Award Winning Spark Cards were introduced in 2018. Spark Cards have been described as an amazing tool helping parents, therapists, and educators teach core language skills to children in a most fun and exciting way. It's mission is helping all children improve language development one step at a time.
