This course will provide guidance on how to navigate a successful career as a medical SLP in a skilled nursing facility (SNF). The first part provides an overview of the continuum of care, Medicare regulations, and the basics for working in a SNF. The second part describes the foundations for defensible documentation and billing using ICD-10 and CPT codes. Using the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual as the driving source, this course will provide specific instructions on how to write evaluations, plans of care, progress notes, and discharge notes that will stand up to review. Strategies to maximize productivity will be presented. Included in this course are handouts for writing functional, measurable, short-term and long-term goals. Offered for 0.25 SLP CEUs – 2.5 contact hours.

Kellyn Dailey Hall, PhD, CCC-SLP, has worked over 30 years as a clinician, clinical specialist, and clinical manager in medical settings. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC where she teaches courses in Medical Speech-Language Pathology. She is a member of the North Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Professional Affairs Subcommittee on Healthcare and has presented at state and national conventions on Medicare documentation and ethics. Dr. Hall is a presenter of two other online courses offered through Northern Speech Services, “Oral Motor and Cranial Nerve Exam: What Every SLP Needs To Know” and “Navigating a Successful Career as a Medical SLP in a Skilled Nursing Facility”. She is the author of the Pediatric Dysphagia Resource Guide. Her current research focuses on the development and implementation of dining culture change practices for SLPs working in SNFs.

What is an Online Course? Our Online Courses consist of video, audio, and/or text content and are offered for ASHA CEUs. You may work at your own pace and start and stop your course as you wish. Your course will conclude with a short post test.
